Brown & Johnston Secure Weekly Honors

Case Western Reserve University senior defensive end Cameron Brown was named the defensive end on the D3football.com Team of the Week, and junior linebacker Travis Johnston was selected as both the Presidents' Athletic Conference and University Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week, after the duo helped lead a stellar defensive effort by the Spartans in 21-13 win over Westminster College on Saturday.

The Spartans' defense held Westminster, which entered the game as the top-scoring team in the PAC, to just 286 total yards, including just 19 yards on the ground.  In addition, CWRU sacked the Titans' quarterback six times in the game, after Westminster had not allowed a sack yet for the campaign entering the contest.

Brown accounted for 2.5 sacks in the game, while forcing a pair of fumbles during the contest.  He totaled four tackles (three solo) in the contest, including 3.5 for a loss.  He now has 6.5 sacks this season and 30.5 for his career (2.5 shy of the program's career record) and leads all Division III players with 1.75 sacks per game this year.

This was the fourth time over his career that Brown has been named to the D3football.com Team of the Week, more than any other player in program history.

Johnston filled up the box score in the game, leading the team with a season-high 11 tackles (seven solo), while also adding an interception, a forced fumble and two pass breakups.  After being held to just two tackles in the first half, Johnston forced a fumble that was recovered by the Spartans on the Titans' first drive of the third quarter.  After CWRU grabbed a one-point lead with 11:39 left in the game, he helped cement the victory, intercepting a pass at the Spartans' 36 yard line and returning it to the 48.  He also broke up a pass on a fourth down play with 1:45 left to force the Titans to turn the ball over on downs late in the contest, and had a tackle on a Westminster fourth-and-16 play to force a second turnover on downs with 1:34 to go, the final offensive play of the day for the Titans.  For the season, Johnston has totaled 24 tackles (13 solo) over three games.

With Saturday's win, Case Western Reserve improved to 4-0 overall, including a 3-0 record in PAC games.  The Spartans will face another challenge at home this weekend, when they welcome preseason PAC favorite Washington and Jefferson (4-1, 3-1 PAC) to DiSanto Field for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, October 12th.
