Case Western Reserve University senior defensive end Cameron Brown earned a spot on the D3football.com Team of the Week for the second time in three weeks, while also claiming both the Presidents' Athletic Conference and the University Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week award for the third-straight week. In addition, freshman kicker Robertson Albrecht was named both the PAC and UAA Special Teams Player of the Week, senior wide receiver Luke DiFrancesco was selected as the UAA Offensive Athlete of the Week, and freshman cornerback Colin Schuster was picked as the PAC Rookie of the Week.
The slew of honors all came following the 22nd-ranked Spartans' 34-3 win at Bethany College last Saturday in Bethany, West Virginia.
Brown broke the program's single-season sack record on Saturday, finishing the game with three sacks (totaling 53 yards lost), four total tackles (all solo), and one forced fumble. He also tallied the first interception of his career in the fourth quarter of the game, returning it 15 yards for a touchdown. His effort helped CWRU hold Bethany to just 98 yards of total offense in the game, including just 17 rushing yards. He now has 9.5 sacks over the last three games, and has tallied a program-record 14 sacks this year, breaking the previous school record of 13, set by Derek Messmer in 1995.
Through eight games, Brown has 43 tackles (24 solo) with three forced fumbles and 17 total tackles for a loss, and leads all Division III players in sacks per game. This was his third career selection to the D3football.com Team of the Week (more than any other player in program history), his fourth PAC Defensive Player of the Week honor, and his fifth UAA Defensive Athlete of the Week award.
Albrecht accounted for 10 total points College on Saturday, connecting on both of his field goal tries, hitting a 24-yard kick to give CWRU a 3-0 lead with 9:48 remaining in the opening quarter, and a 22-yard try with 13:04 remaining in the game that extended the Spartans' lead to 20-3. He was also a perfect four-for-four on extra point attempts in the game.
For the season, Albrecht made 41-of-42 extra point attempts (97.6%) and is a perfect four-of-four on field goal attempts, totaling 53 points. These were the first conference Athlete of the Week awards of his career.
DiFrancesco caught four passes for 61 yards and a touchdown to help pace the Spartans' offense against Bethany. Included in his slate of catches was a 14-yard touchdown reception with 7:58 remaining in the second quarter that helped CWRU take a 10-0 lead.
DiFrancesco has recorded career-highs this season with 37 catches for 460 yards and six touchdowns. This was his second career UAA Athlete of the Week honor, and the first he's earned since the third game of his freshman season in 2014.
Schuster recorded a pair of interceptions during Saturday's win, including one returned for a touchdown. He totaled six tackles in the game (two solo) including half-a-tackle for a loss, and helped limit the Bison offense to 98 yards of total offense and 81 passing yards. His first interception stopped a scoring attempt for Bethany with 7:18 remaining in the third quarter and the Spartans leading 10-3, picking off a pass in the end zone. He added his second interception of the game with 2:47 to play in the game, returning it 51 yards for a touchdown and giving CWRU a 34-3 lead.
Schuster has tallied 33 total tackles and three interceptions during his freshman campaign. This was his first PAC Rookie of the Week award this season.
Case Western Reserve will begin a regular season ending two-game home stand this weekend by hosting Waynesburg University at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 3rd at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio.
