Crossey, Phan & Saxton Secure Weekly Conference Honors

Case Western Reserve University junior safety Patrick Crossey was named both the Presidents' Athletic Conference and University Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week, while senior wide receiver Justin Phan was chosen as the UAA Offensive Player of the Week, and freshman quarterback Drew Saxton received PAC Rookie of the Week honors.

The awards come following the 19th-ranked Spartans' 35-14 victory on Saturday at Westminster College, which had previously been undefeated in PAC contests.

Crossey finished the game with a career-best 15 tackles (four solo), as his effort aided a Spartans' defense that held the Titans scoreless over the second half of the game, and yielded just 304 total yards of offense.  He also tallied his team-leading second interception of the year with 3:19 to play in the game, preventing a potential Westminster score by picking off a first and goal pass on the CWRU one yard line and returning it 55 yards.

Crossey has totaled 28 tackles this season (14 solo), and has broken up three passes, in addition to his two interceptions.  This was his second UAA Athlete of the Week award of the season for Crossey and the third of his career, while he garnered PAC Player of the Week honors for the first time as a Spartan.

Phan caught 10 passes for a season-high 128 yards and two touchdowns on Saturday, marking his second 100-yard receiving effort of the campaign, and the second time this season that he has caught at least 10 passes in a game.  His first touchdown reception of the game came with 1:01 remaining in the opening half, catching an 18 yard pass for the score, and evening the score at 14-14 heading into halftime.  He added a second 18 yard touchdown catch with 9:22 to play in the third quarter, extending the team's lead to 21-14.

Phan leads the PAC and is 16th among all Division III receivers with 8.3 receptions per game, while leading all Spartan receivers with 33 receptions and 361 yards.  He has now been named the UAA Athlete of the Week eight times over his career and twice this season.

Saxton completed 25-of-34 passes for 330 yards (his second 300 yard passing game of the year) and four touchdowns, with just one interception in the game, and added another 24 yards on the ground.  He opened the game with an 81-yard touchdown pass to running back Sam Jenkins on the team's third play from scrimmage, the longest play by the Spartans this year.  He added a pair of 18-yard touchdown passes to wide receiver Justin Phan, one at the end of the first half to tie the score at 14-14, and a second with 9:22 to play in the third quarter that put the Spartans in front 21-14.  Saxton then helped lock up the game with a three-yard touchdown pass to Colt Morgan with 5:25 remaining in the game.

For the year, Saxton has completed 70.5% of his passes for 1,183 yards and 14 touchdowns with just two interceptions.  He has been named the PAC Rookie of the Week three times this season.

The Spartans have now won 14-consecutive regular season games, improving to 4-0 overall and to 3-0 in the PAC following Saturday's victory.  Case Western Reserve's streak will be put to the test this weekend, when the team travels to Washington, Pennsylvania for a 1:00 p.m. contests against 12th-ranked Washington and Jefferson College.
