Aguilar, Calhoun & Phan Named UAA Athletes of the Week

Case Western Reserve University senior running back Aaron Aguilar, senior safety Cody Calhoun and junior wide receiver Justin Phan were each selected as the University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week, after playing key roles in the 16th-ranked Spartans' 28-0 win at 11th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday.

Aguilar was named the league's offensive player of the week, while Calhoun won defensive honors, and Phan secured the Association's special teams award.

Entering the game with just nine carries for 48 yards for the year, Aguilar ran 27 times for 136 yards and three touchdowns, all career-highs, against a rushing defense that came into the contest having allowed just one rushing touchdown all season and ranked fourth in Division III with 49.5 rushing yards allowed per game.  He put the Spartans on the board with 1:31 remaining in the first half, scooping a fumble on the Illinois Wesleyan three-yard line and carrying it into the end zone.  Battling snowy conditions in the second half, he added a 33-yard scoring run on an option toss with 8:00 left in the third quarter, and scored on a five yard run with 13:18 left in the fourth quarter to help ice the game.

Calhoun, a team co-captain, recorded six tackles (four solo) and blocked a punt with 3:31 left in the first half that led to CWRU's first touchdown of the game.  Playing in snowy conditions for the majority of the game, Calhoun and the Spartans held Illinois Wesleyan to 185 total yards in the game, as the team recorded its first shutout since September 17, 2016.  For the season, he has started all 11 games, recording 64 tackles (35 solo).

In Phan's only return of the game, with snow falling and a heavy coating on the field already, Phan returned a punt 33 yards to the Titans' 42 yard line with 9:19 to play, setting up a drive that led to the team's second touchdown.  For the season, he is averaging 11.8 yards per punt return.

This was the first UAA Athlete of the Week honor of the season for Aguilar, and the third each for Calhoun and Phan.

The Spartans improved to 11-0 with Saturday's win over Illinois Wesleyan, and will advance to the second round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs to face Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio on Saturday, November 25th at noon.
