Case Western Reserve University senior running back Jacob Burke was named the University Athletic Association Offensive Athlete of the Week for football and senior safety Cody Calhoun garnered the conference's weekly defensive honor, following their performances during the 16th-ranked Spartans' 45-28 win over Washington University (Mo.) on Saturday.
Burke rushed for a season-high 167 yards and a pair of touchdowns on Saturday. He carried the ball 27 times, averaging 6.2 yards per carry, and scored touchdowns from nine and ten yards out in the first quarter of the game. With the effort, he moved just 95 yards away from becoming the eighth player in school history with 2,000 career rushing yards. For the season, he has run for 748 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Calhoun finished Saturday's win with a team-high 10 tackles (six solo) for the Spartans. He added one tackle for a loss, a fumble recovery and an interception, pacing a CWRU defensive effort that limited the Bears to 369 total yards (including just 81 on the ground) and just 14 points on 194 yards of offense through the first three quarters. His fumble recovery ended a Washington drive early in the second quarter, while his interception came on the Bears' opening drive of the fourth quarter. The team co-captain also returned one kick in the game for 25 yards. For the season, Calhoun has 41 tackles (third on the team) including three for a loss.
This was the second UAA Athlete of the Week honor of the season for Burke and the fourth of his career as a Spartan. Calhoun also garnered the conference honor for the second time this season and the third of his career.
The Spartans improved to 1-0 in UAA play with a win, setting up a de facto conference championship game on November 11, when the team travels to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to face Carnegie Mellon University in the 32nd-Annual Academic Bowl. Case Western Reserve improved to 8-0 on the season with the win, and will face Westminster College at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 4, the team's final regular season home game of 2017.
