Case Western Reserve University seniors Dante Capicchioni, Nick Kwon and Brendan Lynch were each named to the 2016 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Football Team, based on their athletic and academic accomplishments over their collegiate careers.
By virtue of being named to the Academic All-District Team, Capicchioni, Kwon and Lynch will be placed on the ballot for Academic All-America selection. First-, second- and third-teams for Academic All-America honors will be announced on Tuesday, November 29th.
Capicchioni (Birmingham, Mich. / Seaholm) has started all eight games this season at right guard for an offensive line that has allowed the Spartans to average 521.1 yards of offense per game, the 10th-best mark among Division III teams. He was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week on November 1st, after helping CWRU rush for 435 yards in a win over Washington, two shy of the school record, and record 707 total yards in the game. Capicchioni was named an honorable mention to both the All-University Athletic Association and All-Presidents' Athletic Conference teams in 2015. In addition, the Finance major has recorded a cumulative grade point average of 3.64, and has earned UAA All-Academic and PAC Fall Academic Honor Roll recognition over his career.
Kwon (Kaneohe, Hawaii / Mid-Pacific Institute) has served as a co-captain for the Spartans this season, starting each of the team's eight games at cornerback. He has recorded 44 tackles (33 solo) including three for a loss, and leads the team with 10 passes defended and two blocked kicks, while adding a pair of interceptions. He is a two-time All-UAA honoree, earning a spot on the First Team last season and the Second Team in 2014, and was an All-PAC Second Team selection in 2015 as well. Kwon, who has played in 35 games over his career, has totaled 148 tackles and eight interceptions over his career, while also earned UAA All-Academic and PAC Fall Academic Honor Roll recognition. He is a Biochemistry major with a cumulative grade point average of 3.60.
Lynch (Sarver, Pa. / Freeport Area) has been one of the top receivers in Division III this season, ranking 12th in the country in both receiving touchdowns (11) and yards (914) and is 25th with 7.3 receptions per game. He will enter this weekend's game just two touchdowns and 251 receiving yards shy of the program's single-season records. Lynch was named to the UAA Offensive Player of the Week and received D3football.com Team of the Week recognition after catching nine passes for a school-record tying 222 yards against Grove City on September 16th. He also recorded seven receptions for 219 yards and a pair of TDs against Thiel College on October 15th. Lynch has been named an honorable mention to both the All-UAA and All-PAC teams over his career, while also earning UAA All-Academic and PAC Fall Academic Honor Roll honors. He is a Chemical Engineering major with a 3.45 cumulative GPA.
This was the first Academic All-District honor for each of the three players.
Voting for the Academic All-District team is conducted by members of CoSIDA. CWRU is in District 7, which includes Division III schools from Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.
The 24th-ranked Spartans (8-0, 6-0 PAC, 2-0 UAA) clinched a share of the 2016 University Athletic Association Championship with their 56-38 win over Washington University (Mo.) last weekend, and will take on Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 5th.
