Case Western Reserve University junior running back Jacob Burke and junior linebacker Chanan Demery were named the University Athletic Association Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, following their standout performances during the team's 35-7 win at Waynesburg University last Saturday.
Burke matched a school record with four rushing touchdowns on Saturday, while also carrying the ball 20 times for 163 net yards, both career-high marks. He scored three touchdowns in the first half of the game, punching the ball in from two yards out with 7:29 left in the first quarter to give the Spartans a 7-0 lead, and then put CWRU on top 14-7 with a one-yard scoring run with 4:26 remaining in the second quarter. He added a 25-yard touchdown run with 1:16 remaining in the first half to give the Spartans a 21-7 halftime lead, and then scored on a career-long 49-yard run to secure the game with 7:34 remaining in the contest.
Burke became the fourth player in school history to run for four touchdowns in a game, and the first since Brandon McDowell in 2003. In addition, it was the 100-yard rushing game of his career, and the 163 total yards both matched his career total entering the game, and were the most in a game by a Spartan since Manny Sicre ran for 172 in 2011. This was the second career UAA Athlete of the Week honor for Burke, who has run for 234 yards and six touchdowns through three games this season.
Demery collected six solo tackles to pace the Spartans' defense during the win, while recording a pass breakup and his team-leading second interception of the year with 1:28 remaining in the third quarter. He led a Spartans' defense that allowed just 57 rushing yards to the Yellow Jackets in the game, and has surrendered just seven points in the last 10 quarters.
Demery leads all CWRU players with 19 tackles (12 solo, seven assisted) this season. This was the first career UAA Athlete of the Week honor for Demery.
With Saturday's win, the Spartans improved to 3-0 overall and to 2-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Case Western Reserve will return home this weekend to host Saint Vincent College on Saturday, October 1st at 6:00 p.m.
