CWRU Football Adds Former Minnesota Golden Gopher & University School Standout McKelvey

Case Western Reserve University Head Football Coach Greg Debeljak has announced the addition of graduate student and defensive back John McKelvey to the Spartans' roster for the 2016 season.  McKelvey will be joining CWRU after playing as an undergraduate for the University of Minnesota.

"We are pleased to be adding a player of John's caliber to our roster for the upcoming season," said Debeljak.  "He will be our first ever Big Ten graduate transfer.  Furthermore, as a player with local roots, we know the level of talent John will bring to the program."

After redshirting in 2012, McKelvey played for the Golden Gophers for three years, seeing time on special teams and earning Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2015.

McKelvey will be returning home to Cleveland, where he was a standout two-way high school player for the University School in Hunting Valley, Ohio, earning an All-State Honorable Mention and First Team All-Northeast Ohio honors his senior year.  During his outstanding final campaign as a Prepper, he caught 29 passes for 417 yards and eight touchdowns, while rushing for an addition 197 yards, and recorded 26 tackles with three interceptions and two touchdowns on defense.

McKelvey will join a Spartans' defensive backfield that already features a pair of returning All-Presidents' Athletic Conference selections in senior cornerback Nick Kwon and junior safety Cody Calhoun.  The Spartans, who finished the 2015 campaign with a 7-3 record, received votes in the 2016 preseason poll and were picked to finish third in the conference this season at PAC Media Day on Wednesday.

Case Western Reserve will open its 2016 season at home on Saturday, September 3rd against the University of Chicago.  Kickoff for the Spartans' season-opener at DiSanto Field is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
