CWRU Falls to Lebanon Valley in Spartan Southern Classic Opener

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team suffered a 7-1 setback to Lebanon Valley College in the opener of the Spartan Southern Classic at Lexington County Stadium in Lexington, South Carolina on Saturday afternoon.

The loss dropped the Spartans to 2-3 on the season, while the Flying Dutchmen improved to 10-2.

CWRU struggled to get its bats going on Saturday, despite a well-pitched game from first-year Sankalp Doshi, who made the first start of his collegiate career. Doshi yielded just three hits and two earned runs over 6.2 innings of work, while striking out three batters and walking three.

Doshi surrendered single runs in the first, third and fourth innings of the game, as the Dutchmen jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The Spartans stranded put runners on base in each of the first eight innings of the game, but would not score until the fifth, when an RBI single from junior catcher Jake Ryan plated sophomore outfielder Cole Jarrett with two outs in the inning.

CWRU had the potential game-tying runs on base in the sixth and seventh innings, but could not capitalize. Lebanon Valley added a run in the eighth and three more in the ninth, extending their lead to 7-1 and putting the contest out of reach for the Spartans.

Doshi took the loss for the Spartans despite the solid outing, dropping to 0-1 on the year. Kyle Kingsbury earned the win for Lebanon Valley to improve to 1-0, while Tanner Rock pitched the final three innings to earn his first save of the campaign.

First-year Jackson Morris made his collegiate debut for the Spartans in the ninth, retiring all three batters he faced in the game.

Case Western Reserve will look to rebound on Sunday against Roger Williams College at 4:00 p.m. at the Spartans Southern Classic in Lexington.
