Baseball to Open 2020 with Three Games at Earlham this Weekend

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team will get its 2020 season underway this weekend, when the Spartans travel to Richmond, Indiana to take on Earlham College in a three-game series. The two teams will begin the weekend with a single game on Saturday, February 22 at 3:00 p.m., to be followed by a doubleheader starting at noon on Sunday, February 23.

Case Western Reserve, which received votes in the Preseason Top-25, went 24-15 in 2019, including an 8-8 record in road games. The Spartans received a pool 'B' bid to the NCAA Championships last year, winning a pair of games and placing second in the Wooster Regional. CWRU is slated to return 16 players, including all-region selections in sophomore left-handed pitcher Nick Denove (7-2, 1.99 ERA), junior catcher Jake Ryan (.345, 15 doubles, nine home runs, 39 RBIs) and senior left-handed pitcher Scott Kutschke (4-0, 2.15 ERA, four saves). The Spartans' roster will also feature 14 newcomers in 2020.

Earlham was 16-21 overall last season, including a 9-13 mark in home games.  The team is slated to return three All-HCAC selections from last year in first team junior pitcher Joey Gerbus (4-2, 2.38 ERA, two saves), second team senior infielder Danny Dopp (.347, 3 HR, 25 RBI), and honorable mention junior infielder Austin Hatfield (.276, 1 HR, 20 RBI).
