Case Western Reserve University senior second baseman Rocco Maue and sophomore catcher/ outfielder Jake Ryan were each named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District Team, as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
By virtue of being named to the Academic All-District Team, both Maue and Ryan will be placed on the ballot for Google Cloud Academic All-America honors. The Academic All-America honorees will be announced on Tuesday, June 4th at noon.
This was the second Academic All-District honor of Maue's career, after he went on to earn Academic All-America First Team honors last year. This was the first year that Ryan was eligible to receive the honor.
Maue was recently named to the All-University Athletic Association First Team and was the 2018 UAA Most Valuable Hitter. He was named the second baseman on the D3baseball.com Preseason All-America Team this year, after earning D3baseball.com and ABCA All-America honors as a junior. Maue hit .345 (49-for-142) during the year with six doubles, four triples, and four home runs. He finished the regular season tied for the team lead with 32 runs scored, and was second among all Spartan players with 34 RBIs. In addition, he stole 16 bases on 19 attempts, and recorded a .983 fielding percentage with just three errors at second base. He was selected to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week and named the UAA Hitter of the Week on March 26th.
Academically, Maue has carried a 4.0 cumulative grade point average as a Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering major at CWRU. He was named a UAA Presidents' Scholar-Athlete in 2018, and is a three-time Academic All-UAA honoree.
Ryan, a UAA First Team selection in 2019, has recorded a breakout season as a sophomore, hitting .362 overall and connecting on 26 extra base hits in 35 games, including a UAA-best eight home runs. He also led the team with 54 hits, 15 doubles, 38 RBIs and a .664 slugging percentage, while finishing second on the squad with 31 runs scored. He was selected to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week and named the UAA Hitter of the Week on April 22nd.
Ryan has recorded a 3.63 cumulative grade point average as an Engineering major at Case Western Reserve, and received UAA All-Academic honors earlier this year.
Academic All-District candidates are nominated by their institution's Sports Information Director, and then voted on by other Sports Information Directors in the region. Case Western Reserve is a part of District 7, which includes all Division III schools in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.
The Spartans finished the regular season with an overall record of 22-13, and was ranked fourth in the latest NCAA Mideast Region Rankings, while also receiving votes in both the D3baseball.com and ABCA Top-25 polls. Case Western Reserve is now awaiting the release of the field for the 2019 NCAA Division III Baseball Championships on Monday, May 13th at noon on ncaa.com, as the team hopes to receive an at-large bid to the tournament.
