Case Western Reserve University freshman Nick Denove was named the University Athletic Association Pitcher of Week for the first time in his career, after throwing a complete-game shutout in a 6-0 win over New York University during the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
Denove was able to hold NYU (which entered the weekend leading all UAA teams in batting average and runs per game) to just five hits and two walks, earning the win in the game. Despite not striking out a batter, he needed just 91 pitches to navigate through his nine innings of work, allowing just one runner to pass second base in the contest.
The effort was the third-straight complete game for the left-handed pitcher, which leads all UAA players and is ninth among Division III pitchers. Denove improved to 4-2 on the year with the win, while lowering his ERA to 2.27 for his freshman campaign.
The Spartans swept the four-game series at NYU, and improved to 17-8 overall with a 4-2 UAA record. CWRU will continue conference play with a four-game series at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia this weekend, starting with a single game on Friday, April 12th at 3:00 p.m.
