Case Western Reserve University senior second baseman Rocco Maue was selected as the second baseman on D3baseball.com Team of the Week and was named the University Athletic Association Hitter of the Week, while sophomore right-handed pitcher Matt Levine was named the UAA Pitcher of the Week, following the Spartans' sweep of doubleheaders against SUNY Fredonia and St. John Fisher College over the weekend.
Maue batted .500 with three home runs and eight runs batted in to pace the Spartans' offense last weekend. He was eight-for-16 at the plate with six runs, while also collecting a pair of triples, walking twice, stealing two bases on as many attempts, registering a pair of sacrifice flies, and was hit by a pitch as well during the weekend. Over the four games, he slugged 1.313, while reaching base at a .524 clip, while also playing flawless defense at second base. His best game came in the opening contest of the weekend, a 19-0 win over SUNY Fredonia on Saturday, when he went five-for-seven with two triples and two home runs, scoring four runs and driving in five. In the late game against Fredonia, a 5-3 victory, he went one-for-three with a walk, two stolen bases, and a sacrifice fly in the fifth that brought in the Spartans' first run of the game. Maue went two-for-two with two runs, an RBI and a walk in a 5-4 win over St. John Fisher (which received votes in the latest D3baseball.com Top-25) on Sunday, hitting a home run to lead off the game for the Spartans and scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh, and plated a run with a sacrifice fly in the final game of the weekend, a 7-2 CWRU triumph over the Cardinals.
Maue, the 2018 UAA Player of the Year and a consensus All-American last year, is batting .338 with 20 RBIs and a team-leading four home runs this season, while also pacing the squad with six stolen bases. This was the second time over his career that he has been named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week, and his fourth-career UAA Athlete of the Week honor.
Levine threw seven shutout innings during the team's 19-0 win over SUNY Fredonia on Saturday. Levine allowed just four hits and one walk, while striking out five batters during the game, and needed just 90 pitches to navigate through his seven innings of work. He earned the win in the game, improving to 2-1 on the season, while lowering his earned run average to 1.02.
Levine has now been named the UAA Pitcher of the Week three times this season and five times over his career.
The Spartans, who received votes in this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 poll, have won six-straight games to improve to 12-6 overall this season. CWRU will open conference play this weekend with a four-game series against Washington University (Mo.) at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland, Ohio. The series is slated to open with a single game on Friday, March 29th at 3:00 p.m.
