Case Western Reserve University sophomore Scott Kutschke was named the University Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week, after pitching in all three of the 11th-ranked Spartans' wins against New York University last weekend, earning victories in two of the games.
Kutschke pitched eight shutout innings out of the bullpen over the three games, allowing just five hits and four walks, while striking out six batters. In Friday's 13-3 win over the Violets, he pitched the sixth and seventh innings, allowing just a hit and two walks and striking out three batters. On Saturday, an a 7-5 CWRU win in the first game of a doubleheader, the lefty pitched two shutout innings, scattering three hits and striking out a batter, en route to earning the win. He also claimed a victory in the late game, pitching the final four innings of a 4-3 win in 10 innings, allowing just one hit and two walks, while striking out two batters. He entered the game with the bases loaded and nobody out in the seventh, allowing just one inherited runner to score.
For the season, Kutschke is 4-0 with a 1.88 earned run average over 10 appearances out of the bullpen. This was the first UAA Athlete of the Week honor of his career.
The Spartans won three of four games against NYU over the weekend, improving to 23-4 overall and remaining in first place in the University Athletic Association with a 10-2 conference record. Case Western Reserve will be back in action on Wednesday, when the team plays its annual game at Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Indians, at 2:00 p.m.
