Case Western Reserve University will embark on a stretch of five non-conference games to wrap-up its 2017 regular season schedule, beginning this week when the Spartans travel to the seventh-ranked College of Wooster on Tuesday, April 25th in Wooster, Ohio, and host John Carroll University at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland, Ohio on Wednesday, April 26th. Both games are scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch.

The Spartans will begin the week on a five game winning streak, including a four-game sweep of Chicago at home last weekend. The team improved to 21-14 overall, including marks of 10-2 in home games and 11-12 in all games away from home, including neutral-site contests. CWRU has hit .271 as a team this season and is averaging 6.7 runs per game, while pitching to a 4.25 earned run average with a .258 opponents' batting average.
Three CWRU players will begin the week hitting over .300, including senior Aaron Cain (.321, 31 runs, 21 RBI, 10 SBs), sophomore Tyler Wypiszenski (.315, 12 doubles, one home run, 26 RBIs) and junior Dan Watson (.305, one home run, 21 RBIs). Sophomore Jacob Kucia leads the team with three home runs this season, while senior Tony Damiano has paced the squad with 32 runs scored and 17 stolen bases. Leading starting pitchers include senior Jake Shields (5-3, 2.78 ERA), sophomore Mark Gross (3-4, 3.32 ERA) and junior Ben Murphy (4-0, 1.88 ERA), while top options out of the bullpen this season have included junior Liam Killingstad (1.95 ERA, four saves), sophomore Corey Brown (2-1, 3.81 ERA) and freshman Scott Kutschke (1.86 ERA, two saves).
The Spartans are under the leadership of Head Coach Matt Englander, who is in his 11th season with the squad. He has a career record of 255-201-2, good for a winning percentage of .559, and earlier this season, became the winningest coach in the program's history. Englander is assisted by Nick Callahan and Branden Stucky.
Wooster Fighting Scots
Wooster, ranked seventh in last week's D3baseball.com Poll and 10th in the ABCA/Collegiate Baseball Rankings, has won its last eight games and stands at 24-5 overall for the season, inclusing a 5-3 home ledger. The Fighting Scots are coming off a 4-3 win at John Carroll University on Sunday. For the season, the team is batting .332 with 9.5 runs scored per game, while the pitching staff has a team ERA of 3.90 with a .252 opponents' batting average.
Wooster's leading hitters include Jamie Lackner (.430, seven home runs, 40 RBIs) and Michael Wielansky (.427, five home runs, 32 RBIs). Top starting pitchers for Wooster are Tyler Schuch (3-0, 2.86 ERA), Michael Houdek (5-2, 3.47 ERA) and Nanak Saran (4-0, 3.82 ERA), with James Usher (2-0, one save, 1.61 ERA) leading the way out of the bullpen.
The Fighting Scots are led by Head Coach Tim Pettorini, who is now in his 36th season with Wooster and entered the season as the active Division III leader in wins. The Spartans have won their last six meetings against Wooster, including a sweep of a three game series last season. John Carroll Blue Streaks
John Carroll saw a five-game winning streak come to a close with its loss to Wooster on Sunday, and now stands at 15-17 overall, including a 5-6 road record. The team has hit .293 this season and has scored 7.1 runs per game during the campaign, while pitching to a 5.26 ERA with an opponents' batting average of .294.
The Blue Streaks have been led at the plate by Monroe Donnelly (.402, four home runs, 35 RBIs), Dominic Mittiga (.382, two home runs, 32 RBIs) and Patrick Keohane (.379, 14 RBIs). Top starting pitchers on the squad include Jake Servidio (4-2, 4.89 ERA), Drew Vargo (2-4, 5.05 ERA) and Fred Moore (3-4, 5.58 ERA), while Mark Materise (1-1, 2.55 ERA, four saves) and Steven Virost (2-1, 3.86 ERA, two saves) have been consistent options out of the bullpen during the year for John Carroll.

The Spartans have won six of the last eight meetings with John Carroll, including taking three of four games last season. The Spartans ended their conference schedule with an 11-5 record, and are currently in second-place in the University Athletic Association… CWRU would need Washington University (Mo.) to lose three of their four games to New York University next weekend to win the UAA title… The Spartans strength of schedule this season ranks as the toughest in Division III this season… Jake Shields has not allowed an earned run over his last four starts and 35.1 innings of work, surrendering just a pair of unearned runs during the stretch… Shields is also one win away from the program record for career victories, a mark currently held by former Spartan Jamie Hora with 24… Jacob Kucia currently has a six-game hitting streak, his second-longest of the year and tied for the fifth-longest this season by a CWRU player… Aaron Cain has registered at least two hits in 17 of the team's 35 games this season… Cain is also tied for the program's career record with 10 triples during his time as a Spartan… He is currently 15 hits away from becoming the fourth player in school history with 200 hits, and his 185 hits are the seventh-most in program history… Tony Damiano will begin the week ranked fifth in school history with 43 career stolen bases… His 17 stolen bases this season are the most ever by a CWRU in a single campaign without a caught stealing… CWRU is now 6-0 this season when scoring 10 runs or more, and has won 56-straight games when scoring 10 runs or more, dating back to April 17, 2011.
