UAA Standings

UAA Win %

#20 Washington (Mo.)

Case Western Reserve

#25 Emory

The UAA Champion is determined based on winning percentage among teams with at least 10 UAA games played.  Chicago, which does not play a full UAA schedule, is not eligible for the UAA Title this season, and games against Chicago do not count as UAA games.

This weekend's UAA series include NYU at Emory and Washington at Brandeis.

CWRU Spartans

The Spartans will enter the weekend with an overall record of 17-14, including a 6-2 mark in home games this season.  Following their split of a four-game series against Washington University (Mo.) last weekend, CWRU ended its University Athletic Association schedule with an 11-5 mark, and can finish no worse than second in the conference.  The team will need Washington to lose three of its final eight games (with four-game series remaining on the road at Brandeis and at home against NYU) to force a tie atop the UAA standings for the title.  Case Western Reserve has hit .265 this season and averaged 6.7 runs per game, while the pitching staff has a 4.42 ERA and a .258 opponents' average.

Senior outfielder Aaron Cain has recorded a .314 batting average, while junior outfielder/ designated hitter Dan Watson has hit .300 on the season and freshman outfielder Chris Shorter has hit .400 with two home runs and nine runs batted in.  Senior outfielder Tony Damiano has paced the squad with 29 runs scored and 16 stolen bases on as many attempts, and sophomore catcher Tyler Wypiszenski has a team-best 24 RBIs during the year.  The likely starting rotation for the weekend includes senior Jake Shields (4-3, 3.23 ERA), sophomore Mark Gross (3-4, 3.31 ERA), junior Ben Murphy (4-0, 1.88 ERA) and freshman Casey McConihe (2-0, 8.31 ERA), while key members of the bullpen include junior Liam Killingstad (1.85 ERA, three saves, 13 appearances) and sophomore Corey Brown (4.37 ERA, 12 appearances).

The Spartans are under the leadership of Head Coach Matt Englander, who is in his 11th season with the squad. He has a career record of 251-201-2, good for a winning percentage of .555, and earlier this season, became the winningest coach in the program's history.  Englander is assisted by Nick Callahan and Branden Stucky.

Chicago Maroons

The Maroons will begin the weekend with a 17-6 overall record, including a 2-0 road record and a 10-4 mark in all games away from their home field (including neutral-site contests).  After a midweek game against Carthage was rained out, the team is coming off a doubleheader sweep at Beloit College last Saturday, winning the games by scores of 21-8 and 13-10.  Chicago currently leads all Division III teams with a .367 batting average, is second with a .488 on base percentage, and is 20th in DIII with 8.5 runs per game.  Meanwhile, their pitching staff has notched a 5.77 ERA and allowed a .300 opponents' batting average.

Leading hitters for the team include outfielder Connor Hickey, who is batting .441 with a home run and 30 RBIs and ranks fourth in Division III in runs per game, and outfielder Max Larsen, who is hitting.423 with 11 doubles and 20 RBIs.  Top starters include Brenton Villasenor, who is 5-0 with a 2.18 ERA, and Joe Liberman, who is 2-0 with a 3.47 ERA, while Michael Davis (1.23 ERA, 2 saves) and Arno Curtis (2-2, 3.21 ERA) have been the Maroons' top options in relief this year.

Chicago is led by Head Coach John Fitzgerald, who is in his third year at the team's helm after pitching for the program from 1995-98.  He has gone 53-45 during his time with the Maroons, and 267-243-1 during his 13 year career as a collegiate head coach.  He is assisted by Paul Stevens, Scott Budeselich, Marco Fajardo, Ted Ratliff and Tom Piane.

Series History

This weekend's games will be the first meeting between the two teams since a series in Chicago during the 2009 season.  The last time the Spartans and the Maroons faced off in Cleveland was during the 2008 campaign, with the teams splitting a pair of games.
