Spartans Swept in Doubleheader at #16 Shenandoah

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team suffered a sweep in a doubleheader on Sunday, falling 12-6 in the early game and 8-1 in the late contest against 16th-ranked Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia.

The losses dropped the Spartans to 0-3 on the year, while Shenandoah raised its record to 7-0.

Game 1: Shenandoah 12, CWRU 6
Shenandoah scored at least one run in each of the first seven innings in the early game, on their way to the six-run victory over the Spartans.  Case Western Reserve got on the board first in the game, after senior center fielder Aaron Cain and senior right fielder Tony Damiano led the contest off with back-to-back hits, with Cain later scoring on a one-out ground out by sophomore designated hitter Tyler Wypiszenski.  However, the Hornets tied the game with a run in the bottom of the first, and took the lead with another run in the second off CWRU sophomore starter Mark Gross.  An RBI groundout in the top of the sixth from sophomore shortstop Rocco Maue cut the lead to 5-2, but a three run sixth inning, followed by a four-run seventh, helped Shenandoah break the game open.

The Spartans rallied late with four runs in the ninth, including a pair on an RBI single from freshman designated hitter Chris Shorter, but CWRU would ultimately fall in the contest.

Cain went two-for-four in the contest with a walk, a run scored and an RBI.  Gross took the loss for CWRU, falling to 0-1 on the year, while Zach Teeple claimed the win for Shenandoah, improving to 2-0.

Game 2: Shenandoah 8, CWRU 1
The Spartans had trouble getting their bats going in the second game of the day, and the Hornets broke the game open late, on their way to the series sweep.

Senior left fielder Josh Neal collected two of the team's five hits in the game, raising his batting average to a squad-leading .417 through the first three games of the season.

Shenandoah scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first of senior CWRU starter Preston Williams and added single runs and added runs in the third and fifth frames to take a 3-0 lead over the Spartans.  Case Western Reserve got on the board in the top of the sixth when Cain reached on an error and later scored on a wild pitch, but the Hornets got a run back in the bottom of the frame, and added two more in each of the seventh and eighth innings to secure the victory.

Williams took the loss for the Spartans, dropping to 0-1 on the year, while Gerard DePhillips improved to 2-0 with the win for the Hornets.

Case Western Reserve will look to regroup next weekend, when the team travels to Washington, Pennsylvania for games against Washington and Jefferson College and Allegheny College next Saturday and Sunday.
