BUTLER, Pa. - Junior Neal Krentz (Bloomfield Hills, MI /Lahser) and senior Dan Sondag (Cary, NC/ Green Hope) combined on a five-hitter as the No. 25 Case Western Reserve baseball team defeated Mount Aloysius in the first game of a doubleheader.
Krentz yielded three hits and one run in six and one-third innings of work to earn his second win in as many starts this season. In three appearances this season, Krentz is 2-0 with a 1.18 earned run average. Sondag relieved Krentz with one out in the seventh inning and tossed shutout ball over the final two and two-third innings to earn his third save of the season. He gave up two hits and struck out six of the eight batters he faced, including back-to-back hitters to get out of a bases-loaded jam to protect a 3-1 lead in the seventh.
Senior third baseman Andrew Gronski (Hilliard, OH/Hilliard Davidson) went 3-for-5 with a double, one run scored, and one run batted in, while sophomore leftfielder Josh Neal (Gaithersburg, MD /St. John's College) singled three times and scored a run.
Freshman shortstop Danny Souza (Hollister, CA/Palma) singled in a run in the third inning to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead and drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in a six-run eighth inning. Senior designated hitter Will Meador (Columbus, OH/Worthington Kilbourne) singled in a pair of runs in the eighth inning.
CWRU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the nigtcap, but fell 7-4 to drop to 5-7 overall this season.
Gronski finished 3-for-4 in the second game to end the day 6-for-9 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Souza added two more hits and sophomore Eric Eldred (Tecumseh, MI /Tecumseh) went 2-for-2 with a walk and one RBI.
The Spartans' scheduled game at Otterbein on Tuesday has been postponed, but they will host the Cardinals at Nobby's Ballpark Wednesday at 4 p.m.
