CLEVELAND – Junior Kevin Johnstone (Placentia, Calif./Valencia) threw his second career complete game to lead the No. 16 nationally ranked Case Western Reserve University baseball team to a 2-1 victory versus No. 7 Heidelberg University on a chilly Wednesday afternoon at Nobby's Ballpark.
The Spartans (27-8) improve to 7-1 at home and win the three-game season series with the Student Princes (28-6). CWRU's 27 victories are tied for the third most in program history. The 2011 (33-15) and 2013 (29-14) squads own the top two single-season win totals.
Johnstone's (4-2) final line included five hits, four walks and seven strikeouts as the right-hander racked up 127 pitches.
The Spartans scored the game's first run in the bottom of the fourth when a bases-loaded grounder by freshman centerfielder Aaron Cain (Hartville, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) led to a Heidelberg fielding error. Back-to-back two-out doubles by Heidelberg's Joe Staab and Arneal Squibb tied the score in the fifth, but the Spartans would score the eventual winning run on an RBI fielder's choice from senior rightfielder Jordan Dague (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton).
Kyle Fluharty (5-1) didn't allow an earned run but was saddled with the loss in six innings pitched for the Student Princes.
Johnstone's other career complete game came in a 5-2 win at Heidelberg on March 23, 2013.
The Spartans continue a six-game homestand versus cross-town rival Baldwin Wallace University at 4:00 p.m. tomorrow.
