Spartans Fall to Heidelberg at Mideast Regional as Historic Season Comes to a Close

MARIETTA, Ohio – A historic season came to a close for the Case Western Reserve University baseball team on Saturday, May 21, as the Spartans fell 16-6 against second-seeded and No. 10 nationally-ranked Heidelberg University in an elimination game at the 2011 NCAA Mideast Regional at Don Schaly Stadium. CWRU closes its season with a 33-15 overall record.

The 'Berg jumped on the scoreboard first with a pair of runs in the opening half-inning, but the Spartans answered on an RBI single by junior rightfielder Sam Alexander (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams). Case added a run in third to tie it up on a run-scoring base hit by sophomore shortstop Matt Keen (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge).

In the third, the Spartans took their first lead, 5-2, on a pair of errors by Heidelberg and a sacrifice fly by junior outfielder Matt Richards (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./San Clemente). The 'Berg battled back, however, plating two in the fifth and five in the sixth to reclaim the lead, 9-5.

Richards added another sacrifice fly for Case in the bottom-half of the sixth to make it a 9-6 game, but Heidelberg kept pouring it on with another three in the seventh and three in the eighth to make it a 15-6 game.

Freshman Ray Kelly (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) tossed the first four innings for Case, allowing four runs as classmate Jose Vega (Strongsville, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) was hung with the loss to fall to 3-3 on the year.

Richards finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored to pace the Case offense. Junior second baseman Bobby Marko (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush) and senior catcher Steve Bills (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) also had multi-hit days, going 2-for-4 each.
