Spartan Baseball Ends Regular Season with 11-6 Loss versus JCU

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University baseball team ended the 2011 regular season with an 11-6 loss versus local-rival John Carroll University on Wednesday, April 27 at Nobby's Ballpark. Despite the setback, the Spartans finish the regular season at 30-13 overall with 16 victories in their last 19 games.

The Spartans will now play the waiting game, hoping to obtain a Pool B or Pool C bid to the NCAA Division IIII Championship. The official field announcement is not expected until mid-May with regionals slated to begin on May 18.

The Blue Streaks (14-15 overall) got on the board with a single run in the first inning before junior pitcher Brad Potter (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) induced an inning-ending double play. The Spartans tied the game in the third when senior catcher Steve Bills (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield) ripped a solo homer down the left field line. JCU went back on top in the fourth with a solo homerun from John Hastings then added two in the fifth with a sacrifice fly and a hit batter.

CWRU cut into the deficit during its half of the fifth when sophomore shortstop Matt Keen (Tallmadge, OH/Tallmadge) laced an RBI double to left center then came around to score on a single by junior rightfielder Sam Alexander (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams). However, JCU tacked on two more scores in the seventh, three more in the eighth and two more in the ninth. The Spartans could only manage one in the eighth and two in the ninth.

For the game, Keen was 1-for-3 with two walks.

The Spartans used eight pitchers in the game with junior A.J. Boshinski (Alpharetta, GA/St. Pius X) providing an inning and a third of scoreless ball with three strikeouts. Freshman Ray Kelly (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) surrendered three runs in 1.1 innings en route to his first loss of the season (5-1 overall).
