TIFFIN, Ohio - The Case Western Reserve University baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader at No. 2 nationally-ranked Heidelberg University on Saturday, March 26 at Peaceful Valley. The Spartans dropped the opener 9-4 and fell short in the nightcap, 7-5.
With the losses, the Spartans fall to 14-9 but will get another shot at the Student Princes (13-3) in a single, nine-inning game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. in Tiffin.
In game one, the Spartans got on the board in the first when junior outfielder Sam Alexander (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) hit a two-run single to center. Heidelberg answered with three in its half of the inning with Elvin Williams Jr. providing a two-run double to left. Case briefly regained the lead with two in the second as junior outfielder Jackson Stone (Arlington, TX/Lamar) doubled in a run and later scored on a wild pitch. However, the Student Princes struck for five runs in the third with key RBI hits coming from Williams and Derek Andrzejczak.
Sophomore Jamie Hora (Twinsburg, OH/Twinsburg) suffered the loss on the mound to fall to 2-3. The southpaw logged 5.2 innings and allowed seven earned runs while striking out a pair. Ethan Holt was the complete-game winner for Heidelberg, allowing four earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts.
At the plate, Alexander finished the game at 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Spartans. Williams drove in three for "The Berg" and Willie Brechun was 3-for-5 with three runs scored.
In game two, Heidelberg scored three in the first with Brechun providing a two-run homer to left center. The Spartans got one in the second when freshman infielder Andrew Frey (Mentor, OH/Mentor) singled to center to plate Alexander, but the Student Princes countered with an Andrzejczak solo homerun in their half of the inning. Heidelberg then opened the game up with a three-run third inning.
Trailing 7-1, Case rallied in the seventh, loading the bases with no outs and eventually scoring four times. Junior outfielders Jimmy Abed (Westlake, OH/Westlake) and Matt Richards (San Juan Capistrano, CA/San Clemente) each walked to force home a run, and senior third baseman Chad Mullins (Fredericksburg, OH/Waynedale) provided an RBI single. However, the Spartans were unable to muster any more scoring the rest of the way, losing their third consecutive game.
Junior Taylor Lorenz (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) started but only lasted 2.2 innings in falling to 1-1 for the season. Classmate A.J. Boshinski (Alpharetta, GA/St. Pius X) was effective in relief, tossing 5.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Brian Koehl earned the win for Heidelberg with six innings of work and six strikeouts. Andy Lowe threw the final 2.2 frames to get the save.
At the plate, Richards was 1-for-2 with two walks and a double for the Spartans.
Following tomorrow's game at Heidelberg, the Spartans return home to host cross-town rival Baldwin-Wallace College on Tuesday, March 29 at 4:00 p.m. at Nobby's Ballpark.
