PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The Case Western Reserve University baseball team swept this week's University Athletic Association awards, announced by the conference office on Monday, April 18. Freshman Ray Kelly (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) was tabbed Pitcher of the Week and junior outfielder Sam Alexander (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) was selected as Hitter of the Week.
The Spartans (26-12 overall) have won 12 of their last 14 games and are in the midst of the best season in program history. Last week, the team broke the school-record for wins in a season (24) that was set by last year's squad.
During a 4-1 week for the Spartans, Kelly posted a 2-0 record with a 1.29 earned run average. In 14 innings, the southpaw allowed just two earned runs on 12 hits while striking out 10. Kelly threw six shutout innings versus Oberlin College on Wednesday as the Spartans broke the school's wins record.
Alexander batted .500 (9-of-18) with a homerun and eight runs batted-in. He also walked five times, scored seven runs and stole a base to help lead a Spartan offense that scored 56 runs in just five games.
The Spartans are back in action on Tuesday, April 19 in a single, nine-inning game at Denison University at 4:00 p.m.
