CLEVELAND, Ohio – Senior Devin Dye (Canton, OH/Jackson) tossed seven shutout innings as the Case Western Reserve University baseball team defeated cross-town rival Baldwin-Wallace College, 8-0, on Tuesday, March 29 at Nobby's Ballpark.
With the win, the Spartans snap a four-game losing skid and improve to 15-10 overall. B-W has its six-game win streak snapped and falls to 10-5.
Dye allowed just three hits and three walks while striking out five Yellow Jacket batters.
The Spartans got on the board twice in the bottom of the first when sophomore first baseman Brett Ossola (Potomac, MD/Bullis School) drove a two-run double to left. Case added two more in the second as senior catcher Steve Bills (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield) hit an RBI triple to right then came around to score on a double play. The Spartan lead grew to 5-0 in the fourth when senior third baseman Chad Mullins (Fredericksburg, OH/Waynedale) walked to force home a run. Case then blew the game open with three runs in the eighth. Mullins singled in one and junior right fielder Sam Alexander (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) plated another two with a single to right.
For the game, Bills was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Mullins was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while Ossola was 3-for-5 with two RBI.
Freshman reliever Jose Vega (Strongsville, OH/Padua) pitched the final two frames and struck out one to complete the Spartans' second shutout of the season.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, April 2 for a doubleheader at Westminster College (PA) at 1:00 p.m. in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania.
