JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Case Western Reserve University baseball team utilized a late-game surge in game one and a solid pitching performance in game two to sweep a pair of games, 13-9 and 5-2, from Mount Aloysius College (PA) on Sunday, March 20 at Point Stadium.
With the wins, the Spartans improved to 13-6 overall on the season and have now won seven of their past eight. Case will play another pair on the road on Tuesday, March 22 against Grove City College (PA) at 2:00 p.m.
Freshman Jose Vega (Strongsville, OH/Padua Franciscan) was the winner on the mound in game one, closing out the game with 2.1 innings of one run relief to improve to 3-1 on the season.
The Spartans trailed 4-3 as late as the third inning, but put together a five-run fourth highlighted by pair of RBI on a double by sophomore shortstop Matt Keen (Tallmadge, OH/Tallmadge) and a two-run homer by sophomore designated hitter Brett Ossola (Potomac, MD/Bullis School).
Another five-run outburst in the sixth inning, capped by a two-run single by senior catcher Steve Bills (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield), snapped an 8-8 tie to secure the 13-9 win. Six different regulars recorded RBI in the game as Case cranked out 16 hits. Junior right fielder Sam Alexander (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) also left the yard in the third inning, knocking in a pair of runs.
In the day's second game, freshman Josh Suvak (Independence, OH/Independence) tossed a complete game, striking out five and allowing just two earned runs on four hits to pick up his first win of the season (1-0).
After Mount Aloysius jumped out to 1-0 first inning lead, the Spartans struck back with two in the second on a single by junior catcher Peter Zak (Brookline, MA/Brookline). Case added another three runs as Suvak limited the Mounties' offense, two coming on RBI singles by Alexander in the third and seventh to close out the 5-2 win.
