UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University baseball team broke out the bats, opening up for an eight-run fifth inning en route to a dominating 15-0 win over local rival John Carroll University on Tuesday, April 12 at Schweikert Field. Four pitchers combined for the shutout on the mound as the Spartans won their ninth game in 10 tries.
With the win, Case moves to 23-11 on the season and will be back in action tomorrow (Wednesday, April 13) against Oberlin College at Nobby's Ballpark. The 23 victories is just one shy of last season's total, which stands as a CWRU record.
John Carroll dropped to 9-13 overall as senior Devin Dye (Canton, OH/Jackson) fired five shutout innings to earn his third win of the season on the mound. The righty scattered four hits and fanned another four, helping to extend the Spartan pitching staff's scoreless streak to 19 consecutive innings.
Case got a big spark at the top of the order from junior leadoff hitter Matt Richards (San Juan Capistrano, CA/San Clemente) who went 2-for-2 with four runs scored, four walks and two RBI. Sophomore shortstop Matt Keen (Tallmadge, OH/Tallmadge) also collected two hits and two RBI. Junior Sam Alexander (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) led the team with three RBI in the game, as freshman Andrew Frey (Mentor, OH/Mentor) paced the team with four hits in six trips to the plate.
In the first inning, Case crossed home on a passed ball and wild pitch to stake a 2-0 lead. The Spartans added to their advantage in the second when Richards doubled in two runs and Alexander plated another one with a single to right field. After going down 1-2-3 in the third, Case grabbed another run on a wild pitch in the fourth. Senior Chad Mullins (Fredericksburg, OH/Waynedale) also scored Keen on a sacrifice fly to make it a 7-0 ballgame.
The floodgates opened up one inning later, as Case crossed the plate eight times on four hits highlighted by a two-run single by Keen and a two-run double by Alexander. Dye was lifted after the fifth in favor of junior Bradley Potter (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili), who no-hit the Blue Streaks for two innings and struck out three. Freshmen John Fortunato (Toledo, OH/St. Francis de Sales) and Josh Suvak (Independence, OH/Independence) also pitched hitless frames in the eighth and ninth to seal the win for the Spartans.
