Spartan Baseball Splits High-Scoring Doubleheader with Wabash

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University baseball team split an afternoon doubleheader with Wabash College (IN) on Sunday, February 27 at V.A. Memorial Stadium. The Spartans took the first game 13-9 and were downed in a 20-15 offensive showcase in the evening's re-match.

In the early affair, junior lefty A.J. Boshinski (Alpharetta, GA/St. Pius X) hurled five innings, allowing just three earned runs, and struck out five to improve his record to 1-0 for the season. Offensively, senior third baseman Chad Mullins (Fredericksburg, OH/Waynedale) knocked in five and hit his third homer of the season, while senior designated hitter Cory Pecoraro (Strongsville, OH/Benedictine) pitched in with another three RBI to lead the Spartan offense.

Junior outfielder Jimmy Abed (Westlake, OH/Westlake) led off the first with a single to left before sophomore shortstop Matt Keen (Tallmadge, OH/Tallmadge) tripled him in with a long shot to the right field gap. Mullins then followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Spartans up 2-0 early.
Wabash got on the board in the bottom of the second on an RBI double to left by Joe Johnson and tied the game in the fourth, but it was momentary as the Spartans pushed across four runs in the top-half of the fifth.

Keen led off the sixth and reached after getting hit by a pitch. Mullins followed with a two-run blast to center field, which careened off the batter's eye nearly 400-feet away from home plate and made it an 8-3 Spartan lead. Case then added another run in the sixth on an RBI single by junior second baseman Bobby Marko (Lyndhurst, OH/Brush).

After Wabash answered with three in the bottom of the sixth, the Spartans added one in the eighth before cementing the win with three more in the ninth.

The Little Giants exploded for seven runs in the first inning of the day's second matchup, jumping out to an eventual 12-0 lead before the Spartans started to chip away at the lead.

Junior catcher Peter Zak (Brookline, MA/Brookline) rapped a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to put Case on the board, 12-2, and the Spartans continued to rally, making it a three run game, 12-9, after batting around and hanging a seven spot of their own in the bottom-half of the third. Pecoraro highlighted the inning with his first homer of the season, a three-run shot to left center.

Case got to within a run in the bottom of the fourth after freshman second baseman Andrew Frey (Mentor, OH/Mentor) singled up the middle to score Pecoraro and make it a 12-11 game, but Wabash scored another six in the top-half of the sixth to race back out in front, 19-11.

The Spartans were not done, however, and plated four in the bottom of the seventh. Junior outfielder Sam Alexander (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) capped the frame with a two-run triple and later crossed the plate on a wild pitch to make it a 20-15 game.

Wabash's Luke Zinsmaster walked the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but managed to work out of the jam by striking out the side to end the ballgame.

The Spartans will be back in action at Emory University (GA) on Sunday, March 6. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
