SANFORD, Fla. – Sophomore shortstop Matt Keen (Tallmadge, OH/Tallmadge) and junior outfielder Sam Alexander (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) each had three hits and two runs batted-in as the Case Western Reserve University baseball team earned its first conference win of the season with an 8-7 victory versus Emory University (GA) at the University Athletic Association Championship on Friday, March 11 at Sanford Memorial Stadium.
The Spartans snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 7-5 overall and 1-2 in the UAA. Emory falls to 10-7 and 2-0 UAA.
Emory led 2-0 following single runs in the second and third. Case got one in its half of the third following an RBI double by Alexander. The Spartans then struck for three in the fourth, as Keen singled home a pair and sophomore first baseman Brett Ossola (Potomac, MD/Bullis School) knocked in one.
The Spartans added one in the fifth to lead 5-2 before the Eagles scored four in the sixth. Brandon Hannon provided a key two-run single and Emory led 6-5. Undaunted, Case once again answered with a pair in the sixth thanks to an Emory throwing error and an RBI single by Alexander.
The Spartans added an insurance score in the eighth when Ossola plated Keen with a sacrifice fly. Emory was able to score one with two out in the ninth, but Spartan freshman reliever Matt Varley (Copley, OH/Copley) was able to record a strikeout with the potential tying run on first.
Freshman Ray Kelly (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) pitched the first six innings to earn his first career win. Junior Taylor Lorenz (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) threw 1.2 scoreless innings in relief and struck out three, while Varley tossed the final 1.1 to record his first career save. Emory's Matt Johnson allowed two earned runs in three innings in the loss.
At the plate, Keen and Alexander were each 3-for-4, while Keen scored three runs. Hannon was 3-for-4 for Emory.
Case will look to avenge a loss earlier this week to the University of Rochester (NY) when the two play at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow.
