Ossola Drives in Seven as Spartan Baseball Team Stays Hot with 19-2 victory at Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio – Sophomore first baseman Brett Ossola (Potomac, MD/Bullis School) doubled twice and drove in seven runs as the Case Western Reserve University baseball team defeated Denison University, 19-2, on Wednesday, April 20 at Big Red Field.

The Spartans (27-12 overall) have now won 13-of-15 heading into a 4:00 p.m. matchup with Otterbein University tomorrow at Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Indians.

Case has scored 75 runs in its last six games and ranks second in the nation in runs scored (355).

Junior Brad Potter (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) pitched six innings, allowing one earned run on five hits, and striking out five Denison (15-18) batters to pick up his first victory of the season.

In addition to Ossola's three-hit, seven-RBI performance, senior third baseman Chad Mullins (Fredericksburg, OH/Waynedale) continued his storybook season with a hit and three runs batted-in. Mullins leads the nation with 73 hits and 64 RBI – both CWRU single-season records.

Junior centerfielder Matt Richards (San Juan Capistrano, CA/San Clemente) was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, a stolen base and three runs scored. Senior catcher Steve Bills (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield) hit a pinch hit homerun in his lone appearance at the plate.

The Spartans led 1-0 before blowing the game open with seven in the fifth and five in the sixth. Mullins singled in a pair in the fifth and Ossola followed with a three-run double. After junior rightfielder Sam Alexander (Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams) walked to score a run in the sixth, Ossola plated three more with a double to left center.  Case added five more in the ninth for good measure as Alexander singled in two.

Tonight's victory adds to the Spartans' school-record win total.
