Behind a record-breaking offense that ranked among the best in Division III in 2024 and a pitching staff that soared past the program record for strikeouts, the Case Western Reserve University baseball team recorded one of the best seasons in program history, setting a program record for regular season wins, winning the University Athletic Association Championship, and qualifying for the NCAA Division III Championship.
The Spartans finished the season with a 32-9Â overall record with the team's .780 winning percentage ranking as the eighth-best in Division III during the campaign. CWRU's 30Â wins during the regular season were the most in program history. The Spartans were also an impressive 17-3 at home at Nobby's Ballpark during the year, including just one loss at home during the regular season, and went 13-3 in UAA games, winning the conference title and matching the UAA record for conference wins in a season.
CWRU's strength was its offense, which belted a program record 40Â home runs during the campaign, surpassing the previous record of 30 set during the 2019 campaign. CWRU also slugged .490 as a team, the highest mark in program history, while the squad's 364Â runs scored were the third-most ever by a Spartan team and ranked 49th in Division III during the year. CWRU's 8.9Â runs per game in 2024 were the 21st-most among Division III teams.
Leading the way on offense for the Spartans was D3baseball.com All-America catcher Jack Anderson, who paced the squad with a .419Â batting average, 60Â runs scored, and 67 hits, while also collecting 18 doubles, three triples, three home runs, and 10 stolen bases on 11 attempts. Anderson was also named the UAA Position Player of the Year for the second-straight campaign following the season. Graduate student first baseman Dane Camphausen, who was in his first season with CWRU, set a program record with 13 home runs and led all Spartans with a 1.248Â OPS, a .762Â slugging percentage, and 57Â RBIs, en route to earned All-UAA and All-Region First Team honors. Two other graduate students made an impact on the offense during their first years at CWRU, as third baseman James Powers secured all-region honors after hitting .350 with a team-high 18 doubles and 52Â runs batted in, and infielder Franco Alonso hit .324Â with five home runs and 28Â RBIs.
Junior outfielder Nick Harms became the program's all-time leader in home runs during the year, swatting 11 during the season (including his record-breaking 23rd career home run in a 19-1 win over Oswego State on March 15) to increase his career total to 31, while also batting .271 with 49 runs batted in and earned All-UAA and All-Region honors for the second year in a row. Junior outfielder Logan Andreyko emerged as a fixture in the leadoff spot for the Spartans, securing a spot on the All-UAA team after hitting .352 with two home runs, 20 RBIs, and 52 runs scored. Senior infielder Zack Carinci finished the year batting .321 with two home runs and 22 RBIs while stealing 11 bases. In addition, two first-year players regularly found their way into the lineup with Tyler Stillson (who saw time in both the infield and outfield) hitting .316 with two home runs and 19 RBIs, and Nate Arterburn providing a defensive presence at shortstop while hitting .215 for the year.
Meanwhile, the CWRU pitching staff struck out batters at an unprecedented rate in program history. The staff's 10.51 strikeouts per nine innings ranked as the third-best mark in all of Division III in 2024 and were nearly two strikeouts higher than the previous program record. Meanwhile, its 413Â total strikeouts surpassed the previous program record (set last year) by 54Â strikeouts. The group finished the year with a 4.61Â ERA and a .263Â opponents batting average.
Senior left-handed pitcher Reece Marley started 11 games for the Spartans and earned a place on the All-UAA Second Team after going 6-1 with a 5.13 ERA and 60 strikeouts, and ended his career as the program's career leader with 214 strikeouts and 39 games started. First-year southpaw Quinn Saunders made an immediate impact on the rotation with his 15.46 strikeouts per nine innings setting a new program record and ranking second among all NCAA Division III pitchers in 2024. He ended the year with a 5-1 record, a 3.52 ERA (the best among CWRU starters), and a .207 opponents' average. Other regular members of the CWRU rotation during the year included sophomore right-handed pitcher Archer Stankowski, who went 5-3 with a 5.40 ERA and 49 strikeouts over 50 innings and 10 starts, and Stillson, who was 6-0 with a 4.36 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 33 innings.
Anchoring the bullpen once again was senior right-handed pitcher Tyler Horvath, who went 2-0 with a 3.78 ERA and three saves over a team-high 15 appearances. He held opponents to a .192 average while striking out 57 batters in 33.1 innings, and his 14.75 strikeouts per nine innings during the campaign were second in program history only to Saunders' mark during the year. Junior righty Jackson Brewer made 15 appearances for CWRU, 13 of which were out of the bullpen, and went 3-0 with a 3.60 ERA and three saves. Anderson also provided relief at the end of games for the Spartans, going 1-1 in eight relief appearances with a 1.08 ERA, 11 strikeouts in 8.1 innings, and holding opponents to a .241 average.
CWRU got off to its best start in 10 years and the second-best start overall in program history with four-straight wins to start the campaign. The Spartans swept a doubleheader against Washington & Jefferson on the road to open the season, before claiming neutral-site wins against then 25th-ranked Ithaca and Mount Union two days later to jump out to the 4-0 start.
CWRU went 4-3 during its stretch of seven games in six days during its annual Spring Break trip to Lexington, South Carolina, including three wins against Oswego State. The team's final win during the trip, a 19-1 win over Oswego, began a streak of seven-straight wins for CWRU that included a four-game sweep over Chicago at Nobby's Ballpark and stretched into the start of conference play at Emory. The Spartans took three of four from Emory in its first UAA series of the season, scoring 12 or more runs in three of the four games, before returning home for a sweep against Brandeis. CWRU's season-long winning streak grew to nine consecutive games (and 16 of 17 games), including a 28-3 win in seven innings against Ohio Wesleyan, during which CWRU set program records for runs and hits (24) in a game. The Spartans' longest winning streak of the campaign came to a close with an 8-5 loss at second-ranked Denison.
CWRU continued its success in UAA play, taking three of four games on the road against NYU and at home against WashU to conclude the squad's conference campaign. The Spartans clinched the 2024 UAA Championship in the opening game of the WashU series, defeating the Bears 14-3 in seven innings, and ended the series with a walk-off 12-11 win over WashU after scoring eight runs in the bottom of the ninth and winning the game on a two-RBI single by Anderson. CWRU capped off its regular season with a 9-8 win against John Carroll.
CWRU entered the postseason ranked seventh in Division III and was selected to host the NCAA regionals for the first time in program history. The Spartans claimed a 7-4 win over Alvernia to open tournament play but suffered a 5-0 loss to Lynchburg (the reigning NCAA DIII Champions) in their second contest of the regional. The Spartans staved off elimination later in the day with an 8-3 win over Alvernia to set up a rematch with Lynchburg. CWRU trailed by as many as three runs in the game but scored two runs in the sixth to cut the Hornets' advantage to 5-4, and then tied the game in the ninth after Anderson tripled to start the frame and scored a batter later on a single by Powers. However, the Spartans were unable to plate the go-ahead run in the ninth and Lynchburg scored the game-winner in the bottom of the frame to win the contest and eliminate CWRU from postseason play.
Following the season, the Spartans' coaching staff, including Head Coach Matt Englander and assistants Steve Gruenberg, Roger Prettyman, Tre Armstrong, and Evan Faxon, were named the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year for just the second time in program history. Englander, who was already the winningest coach in program history, secured his 400th career victory (all of which have been with the Spartans) on March 24 with a 6-2 win over Chicago in the second game of a doubleheader.
In addition to the team's success on the field, Anderson, Harms, and Horvath were each named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America Team, as CWRU tied for the most honorees among all NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA schools in the country. The three were also joined by Marley and Carinci on the Academic All-District Team.
