Jay Garfield joined the CWRU Athletic Training staff in January 2020 as an Assistant Athletic Trainer. His primary duties will include working with the women's soccer, wrestling, and men's and women's tennis teams.
Garfield comes to CWRU after spending the previous 19 years as the Head Athletic Trainer at Notre Dame College in South Euclid. While at Notre Dame, he oversaw all aspects of the athletic training department, covering 23 intercollegiate sports and three club teams. Garfield was also an adjunct professor at Notre Dame, teaching a variety of health science classes at the college since 2006.
Garfield is a 1993 graduate of Hiram College, where he majored in art/photography and exercise and sports science. He earned his Master’s Degree in injury prevention and performance enhancement from California University of Pennsylvania in 2007.
After his graduation from Hiram, Garfield worked at Keisel Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine until 1995. He then moved to University Suburban Sports Medicine from 1995 through 2000, serving as the athletic trainer from Brush High School’s 13 sports during that period. Garfield has also provided athletic training coverage for the AAU Junior Olympics in 1999 and the Cleveland Barons U18 Elite Hockey Team from 2011-13.
He resides in Solon with his wife, Elissa, and their two children, E.J. and Mollie.
