Over the course of the next two months, athletics.case.edu will be holding a tournament to decide the Case Western Reserve University Athlete of the Decade. The full bracket can be viewed here.
We have come to the final match of the first round, with former baseball player Chad Mullins facing off against former men's tennis player Eric Klawitter. Voting for the final match will begin at noon on Thursday and continue through 11:59 a.m on Friday.
First-Round Match #16 - Chad Mullins vs. Eric Klawitter
Chad Mullins ('11) still ranks as the best hitter to ever wear a Spartan uniform. He was named the D3baseball.com Player of the Year in 2011, in addition to earning a place on the ABCA All-America First Team. The third baseman is a four-time All-UAA honoree, including first team selections in 2009, 2010 and 2011, and to this day, holds team career records with .409 career batting average, 263 hits, 61 doubles, and 185 RBIs, and is second in team history with 160 runs scored, third with 21 home runs, and fourth in slugging percentage (.617) and on base percentage (.486). Eric Klawitter ('14) reached the first round of the tournament via a win in the play-in round over former Spartan quarterback Rob Cuda. Klawitter was a part of the only NCAA Championship winning tennis duo in program history, securing the 2014 NCAA Division III Doubles title. He ended his career with a 75-41 singles record and a 65-26 doubles ledger, giving him the most combined wins in program history at the time of his graduation. Results from this week's matches will be announced on athletics.case.edu on Friday afternoon. The four winners from this week will join the other 12 athletes who advanced from the first round of voting in the second round. Voting will begin on the eight second round matches next week, and a schedule of matches for the second round will be posted to athletics.case.edu on Friday with this week's results.
