The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University sophomore Spencer Weigand, a runner on the men’s cross country team, and sophomore Anika Washburn, a midfielder on the women’s soccer team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past weekend.
Weigand was the top finisher for the 19th-ranked Spartans at the season-opening Sudeck Classic Stampede on Saturday at the Squire Valleevue Farm in Hunting Valley, Ohio on Saturday morning. Weigand placed third overall in the field of 52 runners with a time of 19:34.0 in the 6K race. It marked the first time in his career that he has been the Spartans’ top finisher. Weigand helped lead the Spartans to a first-place finish out of three teams at the meet.
Washburn scored four goals and registered two assists to help the Spartans pick up two wins in as many games this past week. In Friday’s 4-0 win over Oberlin College, Washburn recorded her first multiple-goal game of her career as she scored goals in the 10th and 79th minutes of play. She also added an assist on senior Kimberly Chen’s goal in the 24th minute. On Sunday, Washburn tallied another two goal, one assist performance. She scored goals in the 77th and 82nd minutes of play, while tallying an assist on freshman Johanna Dunkers goal in the 32nd minute of play. Washburn currently leads the Spartans with four goals and two assists for 10 points. She also currently ranks first among all University Athletic Association players with four goals and 10 points. Case Western Reserve is currently 2-0 overall on the 2019 campaign.
The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.
Honorable Mention: Jana Fisher (women’s cross country) was the Spartans’ top finisher in her collegiate cross country debut at the season-opening Sudeck Classic Stampede on Saturday at the Squire Valleevue Farm in Hunting Valley, Ohio on Saturday morning. Fisher placed third overall out of 50 runners with a time of 15:19.6 for the 4K course. Her finish helped the Spartans finish first out of three teams at the meet.
Laura Gorjanc (women’s soccer) helped lead the Spartan defense to two wins this past weekend. Gorjanc anchored a defense that didn’t allow a goal in 180 minutes of play. The Spartans shutout Oberlin College 4-0 on Friday, and followed that performance on Sunday with an 8-0 shutout of Fredonia State. CWRU improved to 2-0 on the 2019 season.
Seldon Magruder (men’s soccer) connected on the lone goal in the Spartans’ season-opening 1-0 victory over Heidelberg University on Friday. In the 17th minute, Magruder dribbled the ball down the right side of the pitch and laced a shot in the top left corner of the goal from approximately 20 yards out. The goal was his first of the season and 15th of his career. CWRU currently stands at 1-0-1 after the first week of competition.
Rafael Perez (men’s soccer) helped a Spartan defense allow only one goal in 200 minutes of play as the Spartans went 1-0-1 throughout the first two games of the 2019 season. In addition, Perez scored the equalizer in the Spartans 1-1 double-overtime tie on Monday afternoon against the University of Mount Union. In the 61st minute of the game, junior Connor Weber laced a corner kick from the right side of the field and Perez headed the ball into the net for his first goal of his collegiate career.
Brianna Lemon (volleyball) led the Spartans to two wins in three matches this past weekend. Lemon tallied a team-high 31 kills during the Spartans Invitational on Friday and Saturday, while also registering a team-best 29 digs throughout the three matches. In the Spartans’ 3-0 win over Bethany on Saturday, Lemon recorded a .320 hitting percentage, notching 10 kills and adding 12 digs. Lemon currently ranks second among all University Athletic Association players with 3.44 kills per set.
Faith Ellis (volleyball) helped the Spartans collect two wins this past weekend. Ellis set up the offense as she tallied a team-high 49 assists (5.44 per set), and contributed 17 digs throughout the weekend. On Saturday, Ellis tallied a team-best 20 assists in the Spartans’ 3-0 win over Denison and another team-best 20 assists in CWRU’s 3-0 victory over Bethany.
