The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University sophomore Calvin Tecson, a member of the men’s swimming and diving team, and junior Caitlyn VonFeldt, a member of the women’s swimming and diving team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past weekend.
Tecson led the Spartan men to a first-place finish at the 2019 Wooster Invitational this past weekend. Tecson placed first in the 50-yard freestyle with a school-record time of 20.77. That time bests the previous school record of 20.79 set back in 2007 by former Spartan John Erickson. In addition, he was a member of the 200-yard medley relay team that finished first with a school-record time of 1:32.35, besting the previous record of 1:32.98 set during the 2013 UAA Championships. Tecson also added a second-place finish in the 100-yard individual medley (53.01) and a sixth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (52.07). Tecson’s time of 20.77 in the 50-yard freestyle currently ranks sixth-best among University Athletic Association swimmers.
VonFeldt recorded a NCAA ‘B’ cut time as she led the Spartan women to a first-place finish at the 2019 Wooster Invitational. VonFeldt placed first in the 100-yard backstroke with a ‘B’ cut time of 56.30. That time currently ranks seventh-best among all University Athletic Association swimmers. In addition, VonFeldt claimed the title in the 200-yard backstroke (2:03.68) and placed second in the 50-yard freestyle (24.30). Her time of 2:03.68 in the 200-yard Back currently ranks eighth-best in the UAA. VonFeldt also was a member of the 400-yard medley relay team that placed first in the event with a time of 3:54.54.
The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.
Honorable Mention: Michael Hollis (men’s basketball) helped lead the Spartans to a pair of wins over Thiel College and Adrian College last week. Hollis filled up the box score in both games, averaging 8.5 points, while pacing the team with 12.5 rebounds per contest and 6.0 assists. He finished the week shooting 50.0% from both the floor (seven-of-14) and three-point range (one-of-two), while making both of his free throw attempts and totaling four blocks and a steal. On Wednesday, during an 88-50 win at Thiel, Hollis registered his season-best marks with nine points (on a three-of-five shooting effort), 16 rebounds and three blocks, while adding five assists. During Saturday’s 78-63 win over Adrian at home, Hollis scored eight points, collected nine rebounds, and dished out a season-high seven assists, while also registering a block and a steal. For the year, Hollis is averaging 5.3 points the game and leads the squad with 8.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists per contest. The Spartans have won three-straight games and now stand at 5-3 overall this season.
Melissa Heath (women’s basketball) recorded the first double-double of her collegiate career, helping lead the Spartans to a 79-72 triple-overtime win over Denison University (which entered the game with a 7-1 record) on Saturday. Heath finished the game with 23 points and 11 rebounds, both career-best marks (including her three years playing for Division I Brown). She also matched her career-high with four blocks in the game, while adding one steal in the contest. Heath led all scorers in the game, shooting an efficient 10-for-13, including two-for-two from three point range. Through nine games this season, she is averaging 6.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per contest, while shooting a team-leading 58.5% from the floor. Heath and the Spartans improved to 3-6 overall with the win.
Juan Perez (men’s track and field) led the men at the Seventh-Annual CWRU Spartan Holiday Classic on Saturday. Perez placed first in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.19, and finished first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.46. In addition, he was a member of the 4x200-meter relay team that won the event with a time of 1:35.75. Perez’s time of 23.46 in the 200-meter dash currently ranks first among all University Athletic Association runners, while his time of 7.19 in the 60-meter dash ranks third.
Dominic Oddo (men’s track and field) gathered four top three finishes at the Seventh-Annual CWRU Spartan Holiday Classic on Saturday. Oddo claimed the title in the long jump with a mark of 6.76 meters. He then finished second in the high jump (1.85m), second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.79) and third in the 400-meter run (52.63). Oddo’s mark of 6.76 meters in the long jump currently ranks first in the UAA, while his time of 52.63 in the 400-meter run ranks second.
Julie Hines (women’s track and field) earned a third-place finish in the 400-meter run at the Seventh-Annual CWRU Spartan Holiday Classic on Saturday. Hines placed third in the event with a time of 1:02.21. In addition, she was a member of the 4x200-meter relay team that placed first in the event with a time of 1:54.51. Hines’ time of 1:02.21 in the 400-meter run currently ranks second among all University Athletic Association runners.
Taylor Jackson (women’s track and field) claimed a second-place finish in the shot put and a fifth-place finish in the weight throw at the Seventh-Annual CWRU Spartan Holiday Classic on Saturday. Jackson finished second in the shot put with a toss of 11.65 meters, while her mark of 14.13 meters in the weight throw was good enough for fifth in the event. Jackson’s mark in the weight throw currently ranks first among University Athletic Association competitors, while her toss in the shot put ranks fourth.
Brian Kent (wrestling) led the Spartans at the RIT Invitational this past Saturday in Rochester, New York. Kent competed at 197 pounds and totaled 17.0 points to the team total. He finished 4-2 with four pins, including one in the fifth-place bout over John Carroll’s Matthew Ferraro in 5:12. Kent advanced to the quarterfinals of the bracket with a pin over Lucas Wilson-Wuestefeld from WPI in 2:24. Though he lost in the quarterfinals, he rebounded with two consecutive pins in the consolation bracket, defeating Theil's Mickeal McCurdy in 2:25 and Norwich's Jeromy Henning in 1:55. For the season, Kent has posted an 11-7 record at 197 pounds, including eight pins.
