The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University junior Joshua Smith, an outside linebacker on the football team, and junior Katie Kaminski, a middle hitter on the volleyball team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.
Smith helped lead a stellar defensive effort for the 23rd-ranked Spartans in a 35-19 win over Washington and Jefferson College at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday. Smith finished the game with eight total tackles (five solo), including a career-high four tackles for a loss and three sacks. All four of his tackles for a loss, including the three sacks, came on third-down plays to end Washington and Jefferson drives. Smith has now registered multiple sacks in three-straight games to increase his season-total to 7.5 sacks, and leads all NCAA Division III players with 1.88 sacks per game. He has totaled 22 tackles (14 solo) with 10.5 tackles for a loss, one pass breakup, a fumble recovery and a blocked kick. With the win, Case Western Reserve remained in first place in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference with a 4-0 league record, and improved to 5-0 overall.
Kaminski tallied nine kills on 19 total attempts for a team-best .368 hitting percentage against Heidelberg on Thursday. In addition, Kaminski registered 16 digs, four block assists and three service aces throughout the match. For the season, Kaminski leads the squad with a .341 hitting percentage and ranks second on the team with 173 kills (2.31 per set). Her .341 hitting percentage currently ranks fifth among all University Athletic Association players.
The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.
Honorable Mention: Drew Saxton (football) threw for four touchdowns to lead the 23rd-ranked Spartans to a 35-19 win over Washington and Jefferson College at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday. Saxton completed 21-of-29 passes (72.4%) for 309 yards and did not throw an interception in the contest. His four touchdown passes came to four different receivers, including a 46-yard pass to freshman Michael Wojkowski with 1:18 left in the opening quarter to give CWRU a 14-7 lead, a 21-yard pass to junior Colt Morgan with 6:57 remaining in the first half to put the Spartans ahead 21-7, a season-long 60-yard pass to junior Chase Witte on the first play of the fourth quarter to extend the Spartans’ lead to 28-7, and a 29-yard pass to senior Mario Robaina to push CWRU’s lead to 35-7 with 9:06 remaining in the game. The 300-yard passing game was Saxton’s second of the season and the eighth of his career through 15 contests. Saxton has completed 63.6% of his passes this season for 1,301 yards and 12 touchdowns with just three interceptions. With the win, Case Western Reserve remained in first place in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference with a 4-0 league record, and improved to 5-0 overall.
Faith Ellis (volleyball) led the team with 23 assists against Heidelberg on Thursday. She also added 12 digs to the team total. For the season, Ellis leads the squad with 347 assists (4.75 per set) and has also registered 151 digs (2.07 per set).
Anika Washburn (women’s soccer) scored the game-winning goal against Chatham University on Tuesday on a penalty kick in the 107th minute, moments after the Spartans earned a hard foul inside the box. The goal was Washburn’s ninth of the season, and fifth game-winning goal of the campaign. She leads the team with 22 points on nine goals and four assists. Washburn currently ranks tied for second in the UAA in goals (9), second in points (22) and third in the conference in shots (47). Case Western Reserve is now 10-2 overall on the season.
Connor Weber (men’s soccer) gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead on Saturday against Brandeis University in the 44th minute when he struck a corner kick into the back of the net. The goal was his first of the campaign. Weber finished the game with a team-best three shots. The Spartans moved to 5-4-3 overall and 0-1-1 in the University Athletic Association with the 1-1 double-overtime tie against Brandeis.
Jackson Kallen (men’s soccer) played all 110 minutes in net during the Spartans’ 1-1 double-overtime tie against Brandeis on Saturday. Kallen finished the game with five saves, including a couple of clutch saves in the second overtime period. For the season, Kallen has posted a 2-2-1 record in over 560 minutes in net. He has made 25 saves and holds a .758 save percentage.
