Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for Jan. 6: Brian Kent and Abbey Lawrence

The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes.  For more information on the Spartan Club, and to help support its purpose by becoming a member, CLICK HERE.

Case Western Reserve University junior Brian Kent, a 197-pounder on the wrestling team, and sophomore Abbey Lawrence, a guard/forward on the women’s basketball team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.

Kent posted a perfect 2-0 record during the D3 National Challenge on Saturday at the Veale Field House. Kent earned a pin in his first match against the #3/18 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and then claimed a victory by decision against #22/17 Millikin University. In Kent’s first match, he defeated UW-Whitewater’s Alex Oruna with a pin at the 4:33 mark in the 197-pound match. Against Millikin’s Logan Hagerbaumer, who is ranked ninth in the latest NWCA Division III individual rankings, Kent won by a 10-4 decision. For the season, Kent improved to 13-7 overall, including nine victories by fall.

Lawrence helped lead the Spartans to a pair of wins over the last three weeks. Lawrence paced the team in scoring in both games, averaging 22.0 points per contest, while shooting 58.1% overall (18-of-31) and 62.5% (five-for-eight) from behind the three-point arc. She also converted three-of-four free throw attempts, and added 4.0 rebounds per contest. On December 20, in a 95-70 win over Wooster, Lawrence scored 24 points on a blistering 10-of-13 shooting effort, including two-of-three from three-point range.  She also collected three rebounds, an assist and a steal in the game. During the Spartans’ 71-51 win over Chatham on January 2, she scored 20 points on an eight-of-18 shooting performance, including three-of-five on long-range tries, and added five rebounds in the victory. Lawrence is averaging 17.5 points per game this season, the second-highest mark among University Athletic Association players, while adding 4.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. The Spartans, now 5-6 on the season, will enter conference play next weekend on a three-game winning streak.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mention: Cole Frilling (men’s basketball) led the Spartans over three games during winter break, averaging a team-high 16.7 points per game off the bench. Frilling shot 47.5% from the floor, 30.0% from three-point range and 90.0% from the free throw line over the three games, while adding 7.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 2.0 steals per contest. His best performance came during the Spartans’ 90-83 win over UMass-Dartmouth on December 19, when he scored a season-high 27 points and collected 10 rebounds during the victory. He shot nine-of-19 overall, two-of-five from three-point range and seven-of-eight from the free throw line, while picking up three steals and an assist. He also scored nine points and collected seven rebounds during CWRU’s 65-64 win over Alvernia on December 18, and scored 14 points and secured four rebounds in a 74-69 loss at Albion on January 4. Frilling is second among Spartan players this season with 11.1 points and 6.4 rebounds per game this year, while pacing the squad with a 47.2% mark from the floor, 17 steals and 13 blocks.
