Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for Jan. 27: Dominic Oddo and Taylor Jackson

The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes.  For more information on the Spartan Club, and to help support its purpose by becoming a member, CLICK HERE.

Case Western Reserve University senior Dominic Oddo, a multi-event competitor on the men’s track and field team, and junior Taylor Jackson, a thrower on the women’s track and field team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past weekend.

Oddo won three individual events and was part of a winning relay team on Saturday at the 12th-Annual Battle for the Obelisk. Oddo took first place in the long jump with a jump of 6.88 meters, high jump with a mark of 1.75 meters and the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.74 seconds. In addition, he was a member of the 4x400-meter relay team that placed first with a time of 3:28.54. Oddo’ mark of 6.88 meters in the long jump currently ranks first among all University Athletic Association competitors and 30th among Division III competitors, while his time of 8.74 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles ranks tied for seventh in the UAA.

Jackson earned two top-three finishes on Saturday to lead the Spartan women at the 12th-Annual Battle for the Obelisk. Jackson won the weight throw with a season-best toss of 15.34 meters, and also placed third in the shot put with a mark of 11.04 meters. Jackson’s toss of 15.34 meters currently ranks first among all University Athletic Association competitors.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mention: Ignas Masiulionis (men’s basketball) turned in a pair of strong performances off the bench for the Spartans last weekend. Masiulionis averaged 12.0 points per game on seven-of-14 shooting overall (50.0%), including a five-of-11 mark (45.5%) from behind the three-point line. He added on 1.5 rebounds per game with a block and an assist. On Friday night, Masiulionis hit a jumper in the closing seconds of regulation to force overtime in an 88-86 loss to Rochester. He finished the game with a season-high 15 points on a four-of-seven shooting effort, while hitting two-of-four three point tries and five-of-six attempts from the free throw line. He scored nine points on a three-of-seven shooting effort (all from three-point range) against no. 8 Emory in a 106-70 loss on Sunday. For the year, Masiulionis is averaging 6.7 points per game. The Spartans stand at 8-8 overall with a 1-4 record in University Athletic Association play.

Isabella Mills (women’s basketball) averaged a team-leading 11.0 points per game over the team’s two games last weekend. Mills shot 41.2% (seven-of-17) overall from the floor and 33.3% (three-of-nine) from behind the three-point line, while connecting on five-of-seven attempts from the free throw line. She added 4.0 rebounds per game, to go along with an assist and two steals. On Friday night, during an 88-60 loss at Rochester, she scored 12 points on a five-of-12 shooting effort, including a two-of-five mark from behind the three-point line, while adding five rebounds, an assist and two steals. During Sunday’s 74-50 loss at no. 25 Emory, she scored 10 points and collected three rebounds, while shooting two-of-five from the floor and one-of-four from three-point range. For the season, Mills is averaging 10.5 points and a team-high 7.3 rebounds per game. The Spartans stand at 8-8 overall with a 3-2 mark in University Athletic Association games.

Isaac Collier (wrestling) led the Spartans at the 2020 Si Ostrach Meet on Saturday. CWRU split four dual matches throughout, as Collier went a prefect 4-0 on the day, including three pins and a major decision. Collier pinned Raheem Clemons of W&J in 4:11, Ethan Garcia of Adrian in 4:41, and Chad Van Pelt of KSU-Tuscarawas in 30 seconds. He now has eight pins this season and 25 pins in his career. For the season, Collier has competed exclusively at 165 pounds and has an overall record of 14-10.

Kelvin Tay (men’s swimming and diving) won two individual events to help lead the Spartan men to a 225-64 win over Ohio Northern University on Saturday. Tay won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.97, and then claimed the title in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:55.67.

Cassiel Yuzik (men’s swimming and diving) swept the diving events on Saturday, as he helped the men earn a 225-64 victory over Ohio Northern University. Yuzik scored 244.65 points in the one meter dive and 243.97 points in the three-meter dive.

Kelly Moton (women’s swimming and diving) won two individual events and was a member of a winning relay team, as she helped the Spartan women defeat Ohio Northern University 220-35 and Hillsdale College 169.5-92.5 on Saturday. Moton won the 100-yard and 200-yard breastroke events with times of 1:09.10 and 2:30.51, respectively. In addition, she was a member of the 400-yard medley relay team that placed first in the event with a time of 4:02.01.

Jonathan Haling (men’s track and field) claimed first in the 400-meter dash and was a member of the winning 4x400-meter relay team on Saturday at the 12th-Annual Battle for the Obelisk. Haling won the 400-meter race with a time of 50.36 seconds, which currently ranks fourth in the UAA and 27th among all Division III competitors. In addition, he was a member 4x400-meter relay team that won the event with a time of 3:28.54.

Julie Hines (women’s track & field) claimed the title in the 400-meter dash and placed second in the 60-meter dash on Saturday at the 12th-Annual Battle for the Obelisk. Hines finished first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.26 and was a second place finisher in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.22 seconds. Hines’ time of 1:01.26 in the 400-meter dash currently ranks eighth in the UAA.
