CWRU Cancels All Athletic Competitions through December 31

CWRU Winter Sports Announcement

Case Western Reserve University has announced the cancellation of all athletic competitions through the remainder of the calendar year (December 31, 2020). This new announcement affects all winter sports that compete in the fall semester (men's and women's basketball, men's and women's indoor track & field, men's and women's swimming & diving, and wrestling).

This decision is in addition to the cancellation of all fall sport competition (football, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's tennis and volleyball), which was announced on July 9.

"Intercollegiate competition is an essential part of your undergraduate experience at CWRU and we have worked for months exploring ways to allow it to continue while keeping the health and safety of our student athletes, coaches, and support staff as the top priority," said CWRU Director of Athletics & Chair of Physical Education Amy Backus in a letter to student-athletes on Monday. "Regrettably, this very difficult decision was made bearing those factors in mind. We as coaches and administrators know how very disappointing this news is and how much you have sacrificed to prepare for your upcoming seasons."

Student-athletes who usually stay on campus during break prior to January 1 will now leave campus when the rest of the student body leaves prior to remote instruction and finals. A decision about safe competition in 2021 will continue to be CWRU's top priority and plans will be communicated as they are developed.

Message from CWRU Director of Athletics & Chair of Physical Education Amy Backus to student-athletes:

Dear Spartans,

In my letter to you on July 9, I indicated that a decision about winter sport seasons competing in the fall semester had not yet been made. Unfortunately, due to the continued rise of COVID-19 cases around the country as well as the new more restrictive guidelines from the NCAA's Resocialization of Sport program, we have determined that no athletic competitions can occur for the remainder of the calendar year (i.e. through December 31, 2020).

This decision affects the sports of Men's and Women's Basketball, Men's and Women's Indoor Track, Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving and Wrestling. As with the fall sport teams, your coaches and strength and conditioning coaches will be working with you to continue with opportunities for practice, skill development and fitness.

Because this pandemic presents such a fluid situation, your practices will be based on recommendations and guidelines at the current time. Some restrictions may include a delayed start to organized workouts, captain's practices, locker room access and more.

With this announcement, those teams who usually stay on campus during break prior to Jan.1 will leave campus when the rest of the student body leaves prior to remote instruction and finals. A decision about safe competition in 2021 will continue to be our top priority and we will communicate plans as they are developed.

Intercollegiate competition is an essential part of your undergraduate experience at CWRU and we have worked for months exploring ways to allow it to continue while keeping the health and safety of our student athletes, coaches, and support staff as the top priority. Regrettably, this very difficult decision was made bearing those factors in mind. We as coaches and administrators know how very disappointing this news is and how much you have sacrificed to prepare for your upcoming seasons.

We look forward to seeing you back on campus in a few short weeks, albeit in very different circumstances. Please be safe and remain healthy for the start of the new academic year.
