CWRU Head Athletic Trainer Tom Monagan

Case Western Reserve University Director of Athletics and Chair of Physical Education Amy Backus has announced the hiring of Tom Monagan as the Head Athletic Trainer at CWRU. Monagan started at Case Western Reserve on July 1, 2020.

"We are very fortunate to have someone with Tom's experience in the role of our head athletic trainer at this critical time," said Backus. "He has quickly jumped into the planning process to welcome our student athletes back to campus this fall and we are appreciative of the knowledge base he brings to the team."

Monagan brings with him 24 years of experience as an athletic trainer, including the last three at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he was the Director of Sports Medicine, Head Athletic Trainer and Athletics Health Care Administrator. While at Colorado College, he oversaw the direct medical care for the two Division I and 15 Division III intercollegiate athletic teams at the school.

Prior to his time at Colorado College, he was the Associate Director for Athletics for Student Services and Head Athletic Trainer at the University of Texas at Dallas from 2010 through 2017. He has also been an Assistant Athletic Trainer at the University of Central Arkansas (2006-10), St. Bonaventure University (2005-06), Gannon University (2003-05), and the Head Athletic Trainer at Nebraska Wesleyan University (2000-03) and Blackburn College (1997-00).

In addition to his collegiate work, Monagan was a Minor League Athletic Trainer for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2001. He served as the athletic trainer for the National League squad at the Gulf Coast League All-Star Game in 2001.

Monagan's works has been recognized on multiple occasions, including being named the NCAA Division III Head Athletic Trainer of the Year by the NATA College and University Athletic Trainers' Committee in 2017. He received the Excellence in Athletic Training Award from the Southwest Athletic Trainers' Association in 2016, and was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Athletic Training Staff of the Year honor in 2017-18, and the American Southwest Conference Athletic Training Staff of the Year in both 2012-13 and 2016-17 while at Texas-Dallas.

Monagan is a graduate of John Carroll University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education with a specialization in athletic training in 1996. He went on to receive a master's degree in physical education from Eastern Illinois University in 1997, while concentrating in sports administration and exercise physiology.

"I would like to thank Amy Backus, Pat Kennedy, and the rest of the search committee members for all of their time and efforts during this process," said Monagan. "Case Western Reserve University is an institution with a rich history of success - both academically and athletically. I am extremely fortunate to be in this role here. Not only is it exciting to be back in Cleveland, where I did my undergraduate work, but it's equally satisfying to be so close to where I grew up in Western New York. I am looking forward to using my sports medicine experiences to help build on the tradition here at CWRU, and provide excellent care to all of our student-athletes."

Monagan is nationally board certified, has served on the National Athletic Trainers' Association Committee on Professional Ethics. He has presented on professional ethics, social media and effective communication at various educational institutions and clinical symposiums.
