CWRU Statement on Fall Sports

CWRU statement on fall sports

Case Western Reserve University announced on Wednesday afternoon that its fall varsity sports (football, men's and women's soccer, volleyball, men's and women's cross country and men's and women's tennis) will not be participating in intercollegiate competition this season.

"After extensive internal deliberation, consultation with health experts, and discussion with members of the University Athletic Association, we have determined that varsity and club athletic competition cannot take place safely this fall," said CWRU Director of Athletics & Chair of Physical Education Amy Backus in a letter to student-athletes on Wednesday.

The University regrets that health considerations require this decision and will be working with coaches and other staff to develop options for these students to be able to continue to practice and otherwise maintain their fitness; please note that this season will not count against athletes' time of eligibility to compete. We also are exploring models for some forms of intramural activity to continue.

Message from CWRU Director of Athletics & Chair of Physical Education Amy Backus to student-athletes:

Dear Spartans,

Today you received news from the university about plans for fall 2020 reopening. Included in that news was information related to varsity fall sport programs as well as club sports and intramurals.

After extensive internal deliberation, consultation with health experts, and discussion with members of the University Athletic Association, we have determined that fall sport varsity and club athletic competition cannot take place safely this fall. We very much regret that health considerations require this decision. We will be working with coaches and other staff to develop options for student-athletes to be able to continue to practice and otherwise maintain their fitness; please note that this season will not count against athletes' time of eligibility to compete. Non- traditional sport seasons will not compete in the fall season. A decision about winter sport seasons has not yet been made.

Intercollegiate competition is an essential part of your undergraduate experience at CWRU and we have worked for months exploring ways to do this with the health and safety of our student athletes, coaches, and support staff as the top priority. Regrettably, this very difficult decision was made bearing those factors in mind. We as coaches and administrators know how very disappointing this news is and how much you have sacrificed to prepare for your upcoming seasons. We too, wish things were different and that we could all be together cheering you on to many successes.

We know that you and perhaps your parents will have many questions and in the coming weeks we will do our best to provide as much information as possible to you. Many details are yet to be worked out.

We look forward to seeing you back on campus in a few short weeks, albeit in very different circumstances. Please be safe and remain healthy for the start of the new academic year.
