Case Western Reserve University freshman Drew Saxton, a quarterback on the football team, and freshman Christina Hickson, a forward on the women's soccer team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.
Saxton led the 19th-ranked Spartans to a 49-23 win at Grove City College on Saturday night, completing 24-of-34 passes for 361 yards and five touchdowns in just the second game of his collegiate career. Saxton (who did not take a snap in the fourth quarter with the game in hand) completed his first seven passes of the game and 12 of his first 13. He threw four of his touchdown passes to Colt Morgan, hitting the sophomore receiver on passes of 18 yards and five yards in the first quarter, and five yards and 28 yards in the third quarter. His fifth touchdown pass came on a season-long 71 yard pass to junior running back Sam Jenkins on the first play of the second quarter. Through two games this season, he has completed 68.1% of his passes for 595 yards and five touchdowns with just one interception, and rushed for an additional score. The Spartans improved to 2-0 on the season and to 1-0 in Presidents' Athletic Conference games with the win.
Hickson scored three goals to help the Spartans pick up two wins in as many games this past week. In Friday's 3-0 win over Hiram College, Hickson recorded her first-multiple game of her career as she scored goals in the 4th and 6th minutes of play. On Saturday, Hickson connected on a 'golden goal' in the first overtime period to give the Spartans a 1-0 win over Chatham University. The game was scoreless throughout regulation, before Hickson struck for the game-winning score with just 7:19 left to play in the first overtime period. Hickson currently leads the Spartans with five goals and 10 points. She also currently ranks tied for first among all University Athletic Association players with five goals. Case Western Reserve improved to 3-2 overall on the 2018 campaign.
