The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University junior Garrett Winter, a midfielder on the men’s soccer team, and junior Brianna Lemon, an outside hitter on the volleyball team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past weekend.
Winter scored a pair of goals on Friday night, including the game winning ‘golden goal’ with 2:05 remaining in the second and final overtime, to lead the Spartans to a 4-3 win over Geneva College. Winter followed that performance on Saturday night with another goal as he scored the game winning goal in a 3-0 shutout win over Oberlin College. Winter currently leads the squad with four goals and eight points, while also leading the team with two game winning goals. He also ranks tied for first among all University Athletic Association players with four goals and tied for second with eight points. The Spartans finished the weekend with a 2-0 record and are now 3-1-0 on the 2018 campaign.
Lemon helped the Spartans to three wins in as many matches during the CWRU Invitational this past weekend. Lemon was named the Spartans representative on the All-Tournament team, after recording 31 kills during the three matches. She added 30 digs, while hitting .386. Lemon currently ranks second on the team with 77 kills and second with 82 digs. Her 77 kills rank fifth among University Athletic Association players and her 3.08 kills per set rank fifth as well. The Spartans have an overall record of 5-2 during the first two weeks of competition.
The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.
Honorable Mention: Charlie Fink (men’s soccer) played over 197 minutes in goal for the Spartans this past weekend, allowing three goals and making six saves. In CWRU’s 3-0 win at Oberlin on Saturday, Fink played 90 shutout minutes and turned away six shots on goal. Fink currently ranks fourth in the UAA with a 0.95 goals against average.
Anna Jaskoviak (volleyball) helped the Spartans collect three wins at the CWRU Invite this past weekend. She led CWRU with 57 digs, and also tallied nine assists and four service aces throughout the weekend. For the season, Jaskoviak has totaled a team-best 122 digs for a 4.88 digs per set average. Her 122 digs rank third in the UAA and her 4.88 digs per set rank fourth.
Lauren Metz (women’s soccer) allowed one goal and made five saves during the Spartans’ 1-0 loss to eighth-ranked Ohio Northern University on Saturday. Metz has now lowered her goals-against average to 1.06, while Metz also has a .813 save percentage. For the season, she currently ranks second in the UAA with 13 saves and fourth in save percentage.
Shreyaa Mukund (women’s tennis) led the Spartans at the Oberlin Invitational this past weekend, as she posted a 2-1 record in singles play. Mukund also teamed with freshman Sneha Karnam to pick up a 2-1 record in doubles action.
Jonathan Powell (men’s tennis) went a perfect 5-0 in doubles play at the Kenyon Invitational to open the season over the weekend, including a win in the ‘A’ flight of the tournament. Powell teamed with junior Anthony Kanam to sweep through the ‘A’ flight on Saturday, picking up an 8-4 win over Kenyon’s Jacob Zalenski and Austin Diehl in the quarterfinals, an 8-5 win over Carnegie Mellon’s Ray Boppana and Nicholas Calzolano in the semifinals, and an 8-1 win over Denison’s Kevin Brown and Blake Burstein to win the title. During round robin play on Sunday, he and freshman Chaitanya Aduru earned two more victories, defeating Kenyon’s Pascal Lee and Nicholas Paolucci 8-4 and Denison’s Patrick McGuigan and Mitchell Thai 8-1. With the perfect weekend, Powell raised his career record to 21-5 in doubles matches.
