The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University sophomore Jake Ryan, an outfielder/catcher on the baseball team, and junior Nicole Carty, a first baseman/pitcher on the softball team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.
Ryan helped lead the Spartans to wins against two of the other top teams in the Mideast Region, with a big week at the plate. Ryan finished the week batting .556 (five-for-nine) with five runs scored, one double, three home runs and five RBIs, while also being hit by two pitches. He reached base at a .636 clip for the week, while slugging 1.667. In a 21-10 win over the 11th-ranked College of Wooster, Ryan went four-for-four with three home runs and a double, while scoring five runs and driving in four. He was also hit by two pitches, reaching base in all six of his plate appearances in the game, while his three home runs matches a school single-game record, last achieved by Rocco Maue during the 2018 campaign. Ryan added a one-for-five game in an 8-1 win over Heidelberg University on Saturday, driving in a run with a base hit in the seventh inning. He is now batting .356 with 32 runs batted in, and leads the University Athletic Association with 13 doubles and eight home runs. Case Western Reserve improved to 20-11 overall on the season with last week’s victories.
Carty led the Spartans’ offensively as they posted a 3-3 record this past week. Carty batted .391 (9-for-23) and scored five runs, while also hitting three home runs and driving in six RBI’s. In the Spartans’ 3-2 win over Emory on Sunday, Carty led the team with a one-for-three performance, including a two-run home run that helped the Spartans secure the victory over the Eagles. For the season, Carty leads the team with six home runs and ranks second on the team with a .413 batting average (43-for-104). She also has scored 22 runs and driven 19 runs on the season. Carty currently leads the University Athletic Association in home runs. CWRU moved to 19-13 overall and 6-8 in the UAA with the three wins this past week.
The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.
Honorable Mention: Nick Denove (baseball) helped lead the Spartans to an 8-1 win over Heidelberg University (which received votes in the latest D3baseball.com and ABCA polls) on Saturday at Nobby’s Ballpark. Denove held the Student Princes without a hit under surrendering a two-out bunt single in the top of the fifth inning. The southpaw pitched six innings in the game, allowing three hits and one run, while striking out six batters and walking just one, and ended his day after 79 pitches in the sixth inning after working around a bases-loaded one-out situation in the with a strikeout and a fly out. Denove earned the win in the game to improve to 5-2 overall, while dropping his ERA to 2.44 with the effort. The Spartans went 2-0 last week, with both wins coming against in-region teams that were either nationally ranked or receiving votes, improving to 20-11 for the season.
Sidney Brannam (softball) posted a 2-0 record on the mound this past week as the Spartans picked up three victories. Brannam posted a 4.35 ERA in 20.2 innings pitched, allowing 10 earned runs on 21 hits and striking out 11 batters. In Sunday’s 3-2 win over Emory University, Brannam allowed only one earned run on six hits without a walk over seven innings, while striking out two batters. For the season, Brannam leads the team with a 2.39 ERA in 85.0 innings pitched. She has posted a 9-5 overall record and has thrown eight complete games, while striking out 49 batters. Brannam’s 2.39 ERA currently ranks third among all University Athletic Association players.
Cara Gianuzzi (women’s track and field) claimed a first-place finish at the CWRU Invitational this past weekend. Giannuzzi crossed the finish line in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 12:03.32 to place first in the event. Giannuzzi’s time currently ranks seventh among UAA competitors.
Samantha Kelts (women’s track and field) finished first in the long jump at the CWRU Invitational on Saturday. Kelts placed first in the event after hitting a season-best mark of 5.00 meters. Her mark in the event currently ranks 13th among UAA competitors.
Brian Holden (men’s track and field) led the Spartan men at the CWRU Invitational on Saturday, as he claimed the title in the javelin. Holden hit a season-best mark of 56.75 meters in the event. That mark currently ranks first among all University Athletic Association competitors and 29th among NCAA Division III competitors.
Trey Razanauskas (men’s track and field) finished first in the 1,500-meter run at the CWRU Invitational on Saturday after crossing the finish line in a time of 3:58.07. That time currently ranks 11th among UAA competitors.
Aaron Umen (men’s tennis) was perfect over four matches last week, going 3-0 in both singles and doubles play. He began his week by claiming an 8-0 win with Chaitanya Aduru at no. 3 doubles and a 6-3, 6-2 win at no. 2 singles, during the Spartans’ 8-1 win against Division II Walsh University on Thursday. In a 9-0 win over Hope College on Saturday, Umen and Aduru defeated Tim Roe and Justin Folkert 8-5 in the second doubles match, and Umen followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Roe at second singles. Wrapping up play for the week, he claimed an 8-6 win with Aduru at second doubles over Stephen Gruppuso and Zachary Vaughn and a 6-2, 6-3 win at second singles over Camron Cohen, helping lead the Spartans to an 8-1 win over 40th-ranked Oberlin College. Umen improved to 17-9 in singles play this year, and to 23-10 in doubles matches, including a 14-6 mark with Aduru. Case Western Reserve, ranked 12th in Division III, won all four of its matches during the week, and will enter the 2019 University Athletic Association Championships with a 19-8 overall record.
