The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University freshman Aaron Umen, a member of the men’s tennis team, and sophomore Madeleine Paolucci, a member of the women’s tennis team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past weekend.
Umen went 2-0 in both singles and doubles play to help the 14th-ranked Spartans to wins over two nationally-ranked opponents in Rochester, New York on Saturday. In the opening match of the day, a 9-0 CWRU win over the 33rd-ranked University of Rochester, Umen teamed with fellow freshman Chaitanya Aduru at third doubles to pick up the first point of the match, defeating Tanmay Thakkar and Yifan Shen 8-2, and followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win at third singles over Shen to clinch the team victory for the Spartans. During a 7-2 win over #36 Hobart College later in the day, Umen and Adura again secured the first point of the match with an 8-3 win at third doubles over Jack Ledford and Colin Molloy, and then Umen topped Jonathan Atwater 6-0, 7-6 (5) at seconds singles to once again clinch the team victory for the Spartans. He improved to 13-6 overall in singles play and to 18-8 in doubles matches in 2018-19 with the perfect weekend. Umen and the Spartans have won four-straight matches, three of which have been against nationally-ranked opponents, and now stand at 14-5 overall.
Paolucci led the 31st-ranked Spartan women this past weekend, as she went a perfect 3-0 in singles play and also teamed with sophomore Nicole Cardwell to go 2-1 in doubles play. In Friday’s match against 11th-ranked Kenyon College, Paolucci earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Erika Oku at first singles and also teamed with Cardwell at first doubles to earn an 8-4 victory over Oku and Maggie Sweeney. For the season, Paolucci leads the team with a 16-5 overall record in singles play, including a 9-3 mark at first singles.
The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.
Honorable Mention: Nick Denove (baseball) pitched his second-straight complete game for the Spartans against 25th-ranked Washington University (Mo.) on Friday. Denove suffered a tough loss in the game, despite allowing just two runs on six hits and three walks, and striking out four batters, while needing just 99 pitches in the effort. He dropped to 3-2 on the year with the loss, but lowered his ERA during his inaugural season of collegiate baseball to 2.79. The Spartans ended the weekend with a 12-8 overall record, including an 0-2 mark in University Athletic Association play.
Arisa Cleaveland (softball) batted .385 (5-for-13) with a team-high six RBI’s to help the Spartans post a 3-1 record this past week. Cleaveland also hit one home run, two doubles and scored two runs. In the Spartans’ 5-3 win over New York University on Friday, Cleveland delivered the game-winning two-run home run over the right center field wall to give the Spartans the 5-3 walk-off victory. She finished the game two-for-four at the plate with one home run and three RBI’s. For the season, Cleaveland is hitting .322 (19-for-59) with one home run, three doubles, nine RBI’s and 13 runs scored.
Sidney Brannam (softball) led the Spartans on the mound this past week, as she went 2-0 and posted a 1.50 ERA. Brannam allowed only two earned runs in 12.0 innings pitched, while striking out four batters. In the Spartans’ 10-0 win over John Carroll University on Tuesday, Brannam pitched a scoreless five innings, as she scattered four hits and allowed only one walk. For the season, Brannam has an overall record of 6-2 and leads the squad with a 1.98 ERA. She has allowed 53 hits in her 46.0 innings pitched, while striking out 29 batters. In addition, Brannam currently has the third-best ERA among University Athletic Association pitchers and tied for second in the UAA in wins.
Cassandra Laios (women’s track and field) led the Spartans at the Carnegie Mellon Quad Meet this past weekend as she broke her previous school records in both the hammer throw and shot put. Laios hit a mark of 54.16 meters in the hammer throw, which broke her previous school record of 52.48 meters. She then had a toss of 13.48 meters in the shot put, which once again broke her previous school record of 13.29 meters. Laios also did well in the discus throw this past weekend, as she hit a mark of 40.88 meters. Laios’ marks in all three events currently first among all University Athletic Association athletes. In addition, she holds the top mark in the hammer throw among all Division III athletes, the fourth-best mark in the shot put in Division III and the 16th-best mark in the discus.
Madeline Lindemann (women’s track and field) led the Spartan women at the Otterbein April Fool’s Invitational as she finished second in the 5,000-meter run. Lindemann crossed the finish line in a time of 17:57.19, which currently ranks as the second-best mark among UAA athletes.
Ananth Suresh (men’s track and field) led the men at the Otterbein April Fool’s Invitational as he earned a second-place finish in the triple jump. Suresh placed second in the event after hitting a mark of 12.88 meters, which currently ranks sixth in the UAA.
David Hall (men’s track and field) earned a third-place finish in the 5,000-meter run at the Otterbein April Fool’s Invitational this past weekend. Hall crossed the finish line in a time of 15:13.05, which currently ranks ninth among UAA competitors.
