The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University junior Jonathan Haling, a sprinter on the men’s track and field team, and graduate student Cassandra Laios, a thrower on the women’s track and field team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past weekend.
Haling led the Spartan men at the YSU Icebreaker on Friday as he earned an eighth place finish in the 400-meter dash. He crossed the finish line in a time of 49.50, which currently ranks first in the University Athletic Association and fifth in Division III.
Laios led the Spartan women at the YSU Icebreaker on Friday as she finished second in the weight throw. She finished second in the event with a mark of 16.90 meters, which currently ranks as the top mark in the University Athletic Association and fifth in Division III. In addition, Laios earned a fifth-place finish in the shot put with a distance of 12.79 meters.
The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.
Honorable Mention: Antonio Ionadi (men’s basketball) led the Spartans to a pair of wins last week, pacing the team in scoring during both games. Making his first two starts of the season and averaging a team-high 32 minutes per contest, Ionadi registered 21.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game on 52.2% shooting overall (12-of-23) and 55.0% on three-point attempts (11-of-20), and was a perfect eight-for-eight from the free throw line. During Tuesday night’s 63-50 win at Adrian, he led all scorers with 19 points (then a season-best) on five-of-11 shooting overall, including five-for-10 from three-point range, with five rebounds, an assist and a steal. He followed that with a career-high 24-point performance in the team’s 80-57 win over Kalamazoo, shooting seven-for-12 overall, six-for-10 from long range, and four-for-four from the line, while collecting four rebounds and four assists. For the season, Ionadi leads all CWRU players with 11.8 points per game, while shooting 45.6% overall and 45.8% on three-point tries. The Spartans improved to 6-2 on the year with last week’s victories.
Abbey Lawrence (women’s basketball) scored a career-high 13 points during the Spartans’ 82-71 loss to 24th-ranked Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday. Lawrence shot five-for-10 overall and three-for-five from behind the three-point arc, while adding three rebounds over 18 minutes of play. She did the majority of her scoring in the second half, scoring nine points during the final 20 minutes of the game. For the season, Lawrence is averaging 4.5 points and 3.2 rebounds per game on 34.4% shooting from the floor. The Spartans stand at 4-2 overall for the season.
Ananth Suresh (men’s track and field) earned a ninth place finish in the triple jump as the Spartan men competed at the YSU Icebreaker on Friday. Suresh claimed the ninth place finish after recording a mark of 12.69 meters. That mark currently ranks first among UAA competitors this past week.
Julie Hines (women’s track and field) competed at the YSU Icebreaker on Friday for the Spartan women and earned two top finishes. She placed 29th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.97, which currently ranks second in the UAA. Hines also placed 41st in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.37, which ranks ninth in the conference.
