Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for Oct. 15: Nathan Ekberg and Madeline Lindemann

The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes.  For more information on the Spartan Club, and to help support its purpose by becoming a member, CLICK HERE.

Case Western Reserve University sophomore Nathan Ekberg, a defender on the men’s soccer team, and junior Madeline Lindemann, a runner on the women’s cross country team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past weekend.

Ekberg led the Spartans to two tough conference victories this past weekend, as CWRU defeated 23rd-ranked Washington (Mo.) University 1-0 on Friday and then toppled the top-ranked University of Chicago 2-1 on Sunday. Ekberg played all 180 minutes of action during the two games and anchored a defensive that allowed only one goal via a penalty kick. For the season, Ekberg has appeared in all 14 games for the Spartans and has tallied two goals for four points. In addition, he has played a key role on a Spartan backline that has allowed only 11 goals in 14 games. Ekberg, along with the stellar play of senior Christian Lytle, have helped the CWRU defense record six shutouts on the season. Case Western Reserve improved to 11-2-1 overall on the season with the two victories, including a 2-1-1 ledger in University Athletic Association games.

Lindemann recorded a career-best 6K time to help the Spartans place second at the Inter-Regional Rumble in Oberlin, Ohio on Saturday morning.  Lindemann completed the 6,000-meter course in a time of 22:18.4, placing fourth among the 313 total competitors.  Her time was 28.2-second improvement on her previous career-best time, and a one-minute, 20.2 second improvement over the last time she competed at the course.  Lindemann and the Spartans totaled 86 points, finishing close behind first-place Oberlin (77 points) and well ahead of third-place Baldwin Wallace (115 points).

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mention: Colt Morgan (football) recorded the most receiving yards in a single game by a wide receiver at any NCAA level (FBS, FCS, II or III) during the 21st-ranked Spartans’ 37-7 win over Saint Vincent College on Saturday.  Despite not playing in the fourth quarter with the team ahead by 37, Morgan finished the game with a program-record 281 receiving yards, blowing past the previous record of 222 yards, previously set by both Dave Wooley in 2002 and Brendan Lynch in 2016.  He also matched a program record with 15 receptions in the game, and caught three touchdown passes, giving him a program-record 14 for the season.  During the second quarter of the game alone, he caught nine passes for 152 yards and a pair of touchdowns.  For the year, Morgan has caught 52 passes for 758 yards (12th in Division III) and 14 touchdowns (second in Division III).  The Spartans improved to 5-1 on the year with the win, including a 4-1 record in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

Cameron Brown (football) tallied 4.5 sacks during the 21st-ranked Spartans’ 37-7 win over Saint Vincent College on Saturday, the most in a single game by a Division III player this season.  Brown totaled six tackles (five solo), forced a fumble with a strip sack in the third quarter, recovered a fumble in the first quarter, and added a quarterback hurry in the game.  His 4.5 sacks in the game accounted for a total of 18 yards lost for the Bearcats’ offense.

Zachary Senft (men’s soccer) gathered one goal and assist throughout the two games over the weekend. On Friday, Senft assisted on senior forward Alex Besl’s goal which ended up being the game-winning goal. On Sunday, Senft put the Spartans on the board first with his fifth goal of the year in the 55th minute of the game. For the season, Senft ranks second on the team with 16 total points on five goals and six assists. In addition, he currently ranks tied for third among all University Athletic Association players with six assists.

Karley King (volleyball) helped the Spartans pick up two victories during the second UAA Round Robin in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania this past weekend. King led the team with 54 kills (3.86 per set) and also tallied 14 digs and four total blocks. During CWRU’s 3-1 win over New York University on Saturday, King recorded a season-high 23 kills on 53 total attempts for a .358 hitting percentage.

Faith Ellis (volleyball) tallied 70 assists (5.00 per set) to help the Spartans earn two victories this past weekend. In addition to her 70 assists, Ellis also gathered 39 digs (2.79 per set) throughout the four games. During the Spartans’ 3-1 win over NYU on Saturday, she set up the offense with a team-high 21 assists and registered 17 digs.

Jennifer Markley (women’s soccer) scored her first goal of the season during Sunday’s game against the 13th-ranked University of Chicago. Markley recorded the goal in the 85th minute of action when she launched a perfectly placed corner kick that curved into the bottom right corner of the goal. She finished the game with a team-high two shots, including one on goal.

David Hall (men’s cross country) led the Spartans to a first-place finish in the team standings at the Inter-Regional Rumble in Oberlin, Ohio on Saturday morning.  Hall finished fourth among 308 competitors in the 8K race, crossing the finish line in a time of 25:37.0, the second-fastest mark of his career and a 90-second improvement over the last time he raced the course.  It marked the second-straight meet that he has been the team’s top finisher.  Hall and the Spartans totaled 46 points in the race, finishing well ahead of second-place Baldwin Wallace (120 points).
