Case Western Reserve University junior Jacob Frisch, a 133-pounder on the wrestling team, and freshman Abbey Lawrence, a guard on the women’s basketball team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.

Frisch paced the Spartans at the eighth-annual Waynesburg Invitational on Saturday. Competing in the 133-pound weight bracket, Frisch picked up a 9-7 decision over Alma's Chase Beecher and then earned a pin over Lake Erie's Jordan Brewster in 3:48. In the semifinal match against Apprentice's Trey Templeton, Frisch claimed a hard-fought 7-4 decision. However, Frisch fell to Apprentice's Kolin Johnson in the draws championship match. His performance notched him a second-place finish in the weight class and contributed 16.0 points towards the team total. Frisch has competed exclusively in the 133-pound weight class throughout the season, earning a 9-5 overall record with two pins and one technical fall.

Lawrence helped lead the Spartans to a pair of victories last week, including a victory in the team’s conference-opener at Carnegie Mellon University.  Lawrence averaged a team-high 16.0 points per game on 57.1% (12-for-21) shooting overall and 75.0% (six-of-eight) shooting from behind the three-point line.  She also averaged 6.0 rebounds per game, and totaled two assists, two blocks and a steal.  Lawrence tallied a career-game during the Spartans’ 74-63 win against the Tartans, scoring a career-high 19 points on seven-of-11 shooting overall and a perfect five-for-five on long-range attempts, while adding seven rebounds and an assist.  She scored 16 of her 19 points during the first half of the game alone.  Earlier in the week, during an 86-76 win at Wooster, Lawrence scored 13 points on a five-of-10 shooting effort and a one-of-three performance from behind the three-point line, while collecting five rebounds, one assist, one steal and two blocks.  For the year, she is averaging 7.5 points per game 3.9 rebounds per contest.  Lawrence and the Spartans have won four-straight games to improve to 8-3 overall in 2018-19.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mention: Ryan Newton (men’s basketball) averaged 11.5 points and 5.0 rebounds over a pair of games for the Spartans last week.  Newton came off the bench in both games, averaging 17 minutes per game, while shooting 50.0% (six-of-12) overall, 33.3% (one-for-three) from three-point range and 90.9% (10-of-11) from the free throw line.  In addition, he added three blocks over the two games.  On Thursday, during a 72-65 loss to Oberlin, he scored 13 points on three-of-six shooting and a seven-of-seven performance from the free throw line, while adding four rebounds.  He finished the Spartans’ 85-71 loss to Carnegie Mellon with 10 points on three-of-six shooting overall, including one-of-two from behind the three-point line and three-of-four from the free throw line, while totaling six rebounds and three blocks.  For the year, Newton is averaging 10.1 points per game and 5.1 rebounds per contest, and is tied for the team lead with 13 blocks.  The Spartans stand at 7-5 overall for the season.
