Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for Jan. 28: Cassiel Yuzik and Cassandra Laios

The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes.  For more information on the Spartan Club, and to help support its purpose by becoming a member, CLICK HERE.

Case Western Reserve University sophomore Cassiel Yuizk, a diver on the men’s swimming and diving team, and graduate student Cassandra Laios, a thrower on the women’s track and field team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past weekend.

Yuzik helped the Spartan men earn a win against Ohio Northern University on Saturday. Yuzik swept the diving events as he won the one-meter dive with a score of 215.70 and then claimed the title in the three-meter dive with a score of 226.45.

Laios led the Spartan women on Saturday as she swept the throwing events at the 11th-Annual Battle for the Obelisk against Carnegie Mellon University. Laios earned the title in the weight throw with a mark of 17.08 meters, a mark good enough for a new meet record. Laios surpasses her previous meet record of 16.78 meters set last year. In addition, Laios won the shot put with a new meet record of 13.70 meters. That surpasses her mark of 13.35 meters also set at last season's Battle for the Obelisk. Her distance of 17.08 meters in the weight throw currently ranks as the best mark among all University Athletic Association competitors. In addition, her mark in the weight throw ranks sixth-best among all NCAA Division III competitors.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mention: Kendall McConico (women’s basketball) averaged 12.5 points over a pair of games for the Spartans last weekend.  McConico scored a season-high 20 points during an 82-79 loss at Washington University (Mo.), shooting six-of-14 overall and making a career-high three three-pointers on six attempts.  She added five rebounds, four assists and a steal in the game.  On Friday, she scored five points with four rebounds and an assist in an 83-55 loss to Chicago.  McConico is averaging 7.9 points and 3.9 rebounds per game this season.  The Spartans stand at 12-6 overall, including a 4-3 conference record.

Ignas Masiulionis (men’s basketball) led the Spartans with 12.0 points per game over a pair of University Athletic Association games last weekend.  Masiulionis came off the bench to average 20.5 minutes per game, and shot nine-of-17 overall and six-of-12 from behind the three-point line.  He added four rebounds, an assists and a steal over the two contests.  During Friday night’s 85-80 win at Chicago, he led all CWRU players with 16 points on six-of-11 shooting overall and four-of-eight shooting from behind the arc, to go along with a rebound and a steal.  On Sunday, in an 88-55 loss to Washington University (Mo.), he shot three-of-six overall and made two-of-four three-point tries for eight points, while collecting three rebounds and an assist.  For the year, he has paced the squad with 10.0 points per game.  The Spartans are 9-9 overall with a 2-5 UAA record.

Neil Wible (men’s swimming and diving) led the Spartan men on Saturday as he won two individual events to help the CWRU men earn a win over Ohio Northern University. Wible claimed the title in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.44 and also earned the win in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:46.42.

Suhan Mestha (women’s swimming and diving) led the Spartan women on Saturday as she won two individual events to help CWRU women earn wins against Ohio Northern University and Hillsdale College. Mestha claimed first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.67 and won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.07. In addition, she was a member of the 200-yard medley relay team that won the event with a time of 1:50.84 and she was a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay that won with a time of 3:40.90.

Hailey Seibert (women’s swimming and diving) helped the Spartan women earn wins against Ohio Northern University and Hillsdale College on Saturday. Seibert swept the diving events as she won the one-meter dive with a score of 189.25 and the claimed the title in the three-meter dive with a score of 188.90.

Alec Hoover (wrestling) led the Spartans at the 2019 Pete Willson Invitational this past weekend, as he advanced to the second day of competition. He opened the tournament with a major decision victory over Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Thomas Severson (11-2). After falling by decision to John Carroll's Spencer Dusi, Alec Hoover earned a decision victory over Elizabethtown's Colton Rex (7-1). Hoover then picked up a tiebreaker-1 (2-1) over Olivet's Reese Willis. On Saturday morning, Otterbein's Jackson Lasko ended Alec Hoover's day with an 8-5 decision. For the season, Alec Hoover leads the squad with 23 wins (23-6 overall) and has totaled seven pins and one technical fall.

Madeline Lindemann (women’s track and field) helped the Spartan women at the 11th-Annual Battle for the Obelisk as she earned a first-place finish in the 3,000-meter run. Lindemann crossed the finish line in a time of 10:29.78, which currently ranks as the ninth-best time in University Athletic Association.

Dominic Oddo (men’s track and field) earned a first-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles to help the Spartan men at the 11th-Annual Battle for the Obelisk on Satrurday. Oddo claimed the title in the event with a time of 8.67, which currently ranks second among all University Athletic Association competitors. In addition, Oddo was a member of the men’s 4x400-meter relay team that won the event with a time of 3:31.24.

Brian Holden (men’s track and field) led the Spartan men on Saturday as he claimed the title in the weight throw at the 11th-Annual Battle for Obelisk against Carnegie Mellon University. Holden earned the win in the weight throw with a mark of 13.90 meters, which ranked as the best mark among UAA competitors this week and fourth-best among University Athletic Association competitors for the season.
