Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for Jan. 22: Sam Hansen and Olivia Picchione

Case Western Reserve University junior Sam Hansen, a guard on the men’s basketball team, and junior Olivia Picchione, a swimmer on the women’s swimming and diving team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.

Hansen averaged a team-high 14.0 points during a pair of games for the Spartans last weekend.  Hansen shot 50.0% (10-of-20) overall and connected on seven-of-15 (46.7%) three-point tries, while 4.0 rebounds per game and adding two assists and two steals.  He scored a season-high 17 points during a 91-74 loss at Emory on Friday, shooting six-of-11 overall and four-of-nine from three-point range, adding four rebounds, two assists and a steal during his 29 minutes of action.  On Sunday, in an 8-168 loss at Rochester, he led all CWRU players with 11 points and a four-of-nine shooting performance, including three-of-six from long range, with four rebounds and a steal.  Hansen is averaging 6.3 points per game this season on 46.6% shooting overall and 37.5% from behind the three-point line.  The Spartans are 8-8 overall and 1-4 in University Athletic Association play this season.

Olivia Picchione led the Spartan women against SUNY-Geneseo on Monday afternoon. Olivia Picchione claimed a first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:12.19 and also added a first-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:48.65.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mention: Hillary Hellmann (women’s basketball) led the Spartans in scoring in both of the team’s University Athletic Association games last weekend, averaging 22.5 points and 7.0 rebounds over the two contests.  Hellmann shot 57.1% overall (20-of-35) and 44.4% (four-of-nine) from three-point range, adding four assists, a block and three steals during 62 minutes of action.  She scored a game-high 19 points during a 71-57 win at Emory University on Friday, shooting nine-of-13 overall and one-of-three from behind the three-point line, adding an assist, two steals and a block.  On Sunday, during a 72-64 loss at the University of Rochester, Hellmann led all scorers with 26 points on 11-of-22 shooting overall and three-of-six shooting from three-point range, while collecting 12 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season.  She also dished out a team-leading three assists in the game and collected a steal.  For the year, Hellmann leads all UAA players with 18.9 points per game and is third in the conference with 8.5 rebounds per contest.  CWRU is currently 12-4 overall and is in second place in the UAA with a 4-1 conference record.

Will McDonald (men’s swimming and diving) led the Spartan men against SUNY-Geneseo on Monday afternoon. McDonald won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.70 and claimed the title in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:56.73. In addition, McDonald was a member of the 400-yard medley relay team that finished second with a time of 3:37.92.

Alec Hoover (wrestling) earned a win against Adrian College in a dual meet on Thursday. Alec Hoover claimed a victory by decision over Adrian’s Elijah Sanchez (13-10). For the season, Alec Hoover ranks tied for first on the team with 20 wins (20-4 overall) and has totaled seven pins and one technical fall.
