Case Western Reserve University junior Michael Hollis, a forward on the men’s basketball team, and graduate student Kara Hageman, a forward on the women’s basketball team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.
Hollis led the Spartans to a 1-1 weekend, averaging 12.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 4.5 steals over the two games. Hollis played 66 total minutes over the two games, shooting 57.9% (11-of-19) from the floor, and adding four assists and two blocks. During the Spartans’ 57-55 win over New York University on Friday, Hollis led the team with 12 points on a six-of-10 shooting performance, while collecting six rebounds, an assist, two blocks and a career-high six steals. He followed that with his second double-double of the season and the third of his career during a 67-65 loss to Brandeis, collecting 13 points and 11 rebounds in the game. He shot five-of-nine from the floor and three-of-four from the free throw line, and added three assists and three steals. For the season, Hollis is averaging 9.3 points per game on a team-high 53.9% shooting mark from the floor, while ranking second among all UAA players with 9.5 rebounds per game, sixth with 1.3 steals per contest, and third with 1.1 blocks per game. CWRU stands at 8-6 overall this season, including a 1-2 mark in conference games.
Hageman averaged 13.3 points and 13.0 rebounds last week, helping the Spartans to three-straight victories. Hageman shot 46.9% (15-of-32) overall and 38.5% (five-of-13) from three-point range during the week, while adding eight assists, a team-high four blocks and a steal. Hageman’s best performance of the week came during Friday night’s 72-62 win over New York University, when she led all CWRU players with 19 points and collected a career-high 15 rebounds. She shot eight-of-13 (61.5%) overall in the game and three-of-six (50.0%) from three-point range in the game, while also dishing out two assists. She followed that with her second double-double of the week and her fifth overall this season, scoring 14 points and collecting 14 rebounds during a 67-64 win over Brandeis, shooting five-of-nine from the floor and two-for-four from three-point range, in addition to blocking three shots and picking up a steal. Hageman began the week with a seven-point, 10-rebound performance against Chatham, dishing out four assists and blocking a shot in an 80-62 win. For the season, she is third in the UAA with 15.8 points per game, tied for the conference lead with 9.4 rebounds per contest, fifth in the UAA with a 47.1% field goal percentage, and sixth with 1.1 blocks per game. Hageman and the Spartans have won seven-straight games, including their first three UAA contests of the year, and stand at 11-3 overall this season.
The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.
Honorable Mention: Isaac Collier (wrestling) led the Spartans this past week, as he posted a 4-2 record in the 165-pound weight class. During Wednesday’s Throwdown against Thiel College and Lourdes University, Collier went 2-0 as he earned a 3-2 decision victory over Thiel’s Austin Bonacci and then pinned Lourdes’ Grant Pittroff in 1:08. On Saturday, Collier led CWRU at the Spartan Mat Classic, hosted by Manchester University in North Manchester, Indiana, as he earned a fourth-place finish in the 165 weight class. He opened the day with a 17-1 technical fall victory over Bellarmine's Josh Craig and then pinned University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh's Tony Kontney in 2:11 during the quarterfinals of the draw. For the season, Collier ranks tied for first on the squad with 19 wins (19-7 overall) and has totaled five pins and three technical falls.
